I won’t bite, unless you ask really nice, but these insects might!

Please Don't Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting by Nazzy Pakpour

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Please Don’t Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting is actually more of a 3.5  than four rating as there are a few illustrations that were somewhat abstract. The first one was the mosquito being shown biting  a victim. The body, head, and everything else did not look real, therefore, it all blended together. The text, on the other hand, is good. Straight forward, covering a few pages for each insect and covers several pieces of the puzzle of that particular insect. And […]

A boy and his bird

Kozo the Sparrow by Allen Say

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Kozo the Sparrow by Allen Say is what you expect from a Say picture book. Due in mid-October 2023 I read via an online reader copy. The story is about his childhood, there are the children of post-war, and there his classical upbringing with the more modern touches of the time. There is nothing new, but as always, Say does not disappoint. The story of nursing a young bird to health, the responsibility and the fondness he has for this bird is wonderfully presented. You […]

Loss and Love

Always Sisters: A Story of Loss and Love by Saira Mir

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you see a book with the title Always Sisters: A Story of Loss and Love a lot can go through your mind, as I know it did for me. Which was mostly what we were to deal with in the case of death. Disease? Accident? An older sibling taking their own life? Not to mention, is this going to be a straight forward or a “sappy” read. For me that made the process of reading this book perhaps more interesting than the book itself. […]

Jamie take two

Just Jamie  by Terri Libenson

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first read the graphic novel, Just Jamie by Terri Libenson in 2019. I only went back for a second round as I could not remember anything about it. In fact, it was to the point that I even questioned if I had read it. Well, I did have one image in my head, but it did not help much in remembering the story. However, my rating of five back then, is now 3.5 to 4 rating. This book was good, and I liked how the characters […]

M for Mature

Sensor by Junji Ito

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It was Saturday and I had two options, stay at home and do laundry and not get any reading done, or take an hour or two at the library and try and get some reading done. Besides, I had to pick up some interlibrary loans anyway. I picked the library (now, you need to understand that I work at an independent bookstore, where I have access to free books, usually brand new, never touched reader copies, not like that library version of Nimona that had […]

Second time is a charm

Nimona by N.D Stevenson

August 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I first read Nimona by N.D Stevenson in 2019 (but my version had their dead name). My main takeaway from this recent read was how the theme itself has not changed, but our perceptions of it might have. I know mine did. I didn’t even know what a dead name was four years ago. It would never have occurred to me that it is harmful to misgender or dead-name someone. In those few years, a lot has happened, and I hope I have grown past […]
