It just keeps being awesome, you guys

Saga is my favourite comic book of the last few years and I feel like I do nothing but spend my days waiting for a new trade paperback to come out. I managed to save volume five for an unprecedented nine days from buying it until I actually read it, because I know that it’ll probably be another six months at least until I get more. The writing is flawless, the art is breathtaking. The plot is never, even for a second, predictable. The six […]

The Best Part of this Pirate Comic was the Aaaaaarrrrrt

August 22, 2015 by Halbs 4 Comments

I wanted to love Stokes’ and Herman’s Galveston. I am a die-hard Texan, so a Texas-set graphic novel based on the real life meeting of legendary Alamo defender Jim Bowie and pirate Jean LaFitte seemed like a definite winner. Unfortunately, the story just didn’t work for me. The wise-cracking, sassy characters seemed pretty one dimensional (or Jack Sparrow-y), weird misspellings took me out of the book (“Commanches” and “Comanches”, its vs. it’s), and not a lot seemed to happen in the story. Additionally, in real […]

What are we doing?

This is a review of all three volumes of Alex + Ada. You can buy all three for about $34 USD. The review is spoiler free for all three volumes, beyond basic details of volume one. Alex + Ada is a quiet story about friendship, sacrifice, and sexy sex robots. I’ve read a thousand comics, and this series immediately moved to the top of my list. Alex is a single guy in the near future. He has an ok job and a strong, small circle […]

For Gina, and Meika, and Keri – thanks for picking me up.

Jane, the Fox, and Me by Fanny Britt, Isabelle Arsenault (Illustrator), Christelle Morelli (Translator), Susan Ouriou (Translator)

My choice to read Jane, the Fox, and Me was influenced by my participation in the Read Harder Challenge. Tasks 19 and 20 are to read a work originally published in another language and a graphic novel, graphic memoir, or collection of comics of any kind. I had some other books picked out for these tasks, and I have every intention of reading them, but when bonnie and the Chancellor’s reviews of this book back in January I knew that this was something I wanted […]
