I was looking forward to this old school Hollywood noir in graphic novel format, but this book just pissed me off on a few different levels. The premise, a writer with PTSD and writer’s block wakes up next to a dead starlet who just happens to be starring in his movie, was so great. There are fascinating characters: the blackballed writer who just can’t deal, the smart-as-a-whip publicity girl, a hulking and somewhat shady security guy, a head over heels in love movie exec, and […]
Consider me an official fangirl
Spoilers for Volume 1. The second volume of The Wicked + The Divine only continues to amaze and surprise. I’m so glad I’ve finally found a series I can properly fangirl over. In this volume, Laura, the main character, is dealing with her grief over the surprising and tragic death of Lucifer, the god she grew close to in the first installment. She’s clearly numb to the rest of the world and the rest of the gods until she’s pulled back in by some new […]
Just a sophomore slump, hopefully
I really liked the first installment of this graphic novel series, but volume two fell a little flat for me. In volume two, Ada is struggling with her place and purpose in the world now that she has consciousness and can make her own decisions. The two become closer, but understandably, Alex wants to give Ada enough space to figure out who she is. Ada does not take well to Alex’s imposed distancing and decides to venture out into the world on her own. I’m […]
Gods living as humans, what could go wrong?
This is the graphic novel I’ve been looking for. I’ve enjoyed exploring more in the genre this year, but up until this point, none of them (aside from a few nonfiction graphic novels and possibly Nimona) have really struck me as using the medium to their full advantage, to become something more than a fun little story that I’ll never think about again. The Wicked + The Divine is very, very promising and I really hope the next installments live up to it. The story […]
Wonder Woman continues to kick ass

Diana is determined to do whatever it takes to get her back, and since Hades is none too pleased about the way Wonder Woman and her friends tricked her and Poseidon, she may have to pay a heavy and lasting price in order to secure her friend’s safety. She enlists the help of the divine smith, Hephaestus, for suitable arms and […]
A fun new comics discovery
Kamala Khan is a pretty ordinary geeky teenager from Jersey City, until she’s suddenly given the extraordinary powers of the superhero Ms. Marvel. She’s both excited and confused. Can a Muslim girl even be a superhero? She certainly feels that the outfit could be a bit less revealing. How is she going to combine the responsibilities of fighting crime, rescuing people and righting wrongs if she also has to worry about obeying her parents and keeping cerfew? Before she’s even entirely aware what she’s doing, […]
