I’d heard of the Maus graphic novels several years ago and read the first volume in a gallop. So I decided, after being gifted both volumes from my sister a few birthdays back, that it was time to read both volumes this year. I was not prepared for the sobering similarities between 1930s Nazi-occupied Poland and 2016 America, but that’s what makes art so crucial in general, and stories like Vladek Spiegelman’s in particular. Read my full review to find out what’s so important. Better […]
Running Just as Fast as He Can
My attempt to foment a late-in-life love of comic books continues with Volumes 5 and 6 of The Flash. In these collections the scarlet speedster battles the Rogues’ Gallery, meets the Green Lantern, and tries to steer an impressionable Wally West. Unfortunately neither of these volumes has much in the way of memorable storytelling or imagery. I chose the Flash for my introduction to comics because of my love of the CW television series, which features great characters, memorable villains, and only occasionally takes a […]
I resolved to publish at least one more post before 2017
After achieving my double cannonball I began reading the, so far, interesting but dense White Trash because I could afford the luxury of long winded non-fiction. Then my sister-in-law gifted me the adorable comic Breaking Cat News and I figured it’d be a fun way to sneak in one more review before the end of the year. Georgia Dunn was inspired by her real life cats one evening when they all came to investigate a broken shelf; she gave them voices and narrated their investigative report […]
Ta-Nehisi Coates brings a comic book figure to life
Because I’m not a comic book aficionado, I am positive that there are pieces I am missing out on with the Black Panther series. For example, the first I’d heard of Black Panther as a Marvel character was in Captain America: Civil War (which was meh for me, and I’m pretty much done with comic book movies at the moment. I ain’t sorry). I don’t know the history or the backstory, so I don’t know how much I was prepared for this new incarnation. But […]
Cannonball!!!
Since “Captain American: Civil War” I’ve been intrigued by the Black Panther Character. I like that there’s a character who’s not supernatural (Captain America, Thor, Spiderman, etc.), but has skills similar to Black Widow and Hawkeye, which are my favorite types of super heroes. It’s about time that a person of color is going to be featured as a superhero and not just as Iron Man’s sidekick. I like to read the back stories on the superheroes in the movies, I’ve been wanting to catch […]
Low on the Lumberjane Scale
I have really liked the Lumberjanes series so far, but I gotta say number 5 was a little bit of a let-down. The basic storyline follows 5 friends and their camp counsellor through a summer of camp sponsored by a vaguely scout-like organization, the eponymous Lumberjanes. Except of course that this is not your typical scouting group, and not your typical summer camp. Strange events and encounters of the supernatural variety will happen, and the camp and its director are most certainly involved somehow. Each […]
