Look, of course I am going to talk about Stranger Things

February 18, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I guess will mention that I like Stranger Things just fine. But it has a false veneer to it because there’s so many nods to so many things. That’s fun, but it automatically lacks depth or seriousness (and I will not be arguing that this series lacks thematic depth, but it does have narrative depth), because if you’re winking and nodding too much, you’re not doing a whole lot. This series is a lot of fun too. The girls are tough, the writing is tight, […]

Pink fart cloud and Hellcat save the day

February 18, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

After a run of disappointing sequels, Patsy Walker aka Hellcat: Don’t Stop Me-ow, was a welcome break of the pattern. The fun and action with a little drama combo of volume one is back in volume two. The main villainess action was a little dumb again but that’s ok. Black Cat is a stereotypical megalomaniac, much like the villainess Casiolena from the first volume, with her minions doing a lot of the work, generally not very well. Nevertheless, they still manage to get Patsy and […]

Childhood in Iran

February 13, 2017 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

Best for: Anyone who likes a well-told story. In a nutshell: Young girl growing up in Iran in the 70s and 80s. Line that sticks with me: “In any case, as long as there is oil in the middle east we will never have peace.” Why I chose it: A friend and I were discussing books and I shared how much I enjoyed the March graphic novels. She lent me this one, and I’m very glad she did. Review: I’d heard of this book before, […]

Watch out boy she’ll chew you up!

February 11, 2017 by pluiedenovembre 1 Comment

Junko Mizuno is a Japanese artist whose style is usually described as “Gothic kawaii”. Her illustrations are cute and childish but also erotic and grotesque. After Cinderalla and Hansel and Gretel, Princess Mermaid is her third and darkest retelling of a classic fairytale, and the one that differs the most from the original version (I’m referring to the Hans Christian Andersen story, not the sanitized Disney version). Princess Mermaid tells the story of three mermaid sisters who have sworn to avenge the death of their […]

These are the books I worry about my nephew for

February 11, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Ugh….why does it have to be Lumberjanes?? Why not Lumberjohns…..wait, Lumberjames?! That’s right! First we ALMOST have a girl for president and then we have to sit here and lose our valuable logging industry to the worldwide GYNOCRACY! I worry about what my 10 year old nephew will do when he thinks he is picking up a a wholesome boyscout comic book and this is what he reads. Girls not needing boys, girls running around causing trouble, girls having great adventures, but not thinking about […]

Lucy’s Wedding

February 11, 2017 by bonnie 2 Comments

I’ve heard of Lucy Knisley before on CBR and Goodreads. I greatly enjoyed Relish, even if the graphic novel layout didn’t always meet my expectations. And then I read Something New and immersed myself in the incredible storytelling and art. It’s a delightful and insightful memoir that merges art and philosophy proficiently. Knisley talks about the journey of her wedding, from her relationship to her husband and the winding path of love, to her engagement and subsequent struggle to identify as a “bride.” She unpacks […]
