My Brother’s Husband, Volume 1

December 31, 2017 by The Chancellor Leave a Comment

This year I’ve been challenging myself to read outside of my comfort zone. I saw “My Brother’s Husband” on the bookshelf at my library and remembered hearing about it online regarding some of the top new graphic novels. This was a good book for getting me out of my comfort zone for sure. The premise of this book is that Yaichi is a Japanese single-dad who’s remembering his younger brother, Ryoji, and the first anniversary of his death. Who should come knocking but Ryoji’s husband […]

Not exactly like the TV show, but still very good

December 30, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

From the blurb: Meet Jessica Jones. Once upon a time, she was a costumed superhero…but not a very good one. Her powers were unremarkable compared to the costumed icons that populate the Marvel Universe. In a city of Marvels, Jessica Jones never found her niche. Now a chain-smoking, self-destructive alcoholic with a mean inferiority complex, Jones is the owner and sole employee of Alias Investigations – a small, private-investigative firm specialising in superhuman cases. When she uncovers the potentially explosive secret of one hero’s true […]

Escape now. Hug later.

Okay, did you read the hilarious tweet conversation this summer between Chuck Wendig and Sam Sykes? It’s here. I’ll wait while you read it, because it’s a damned delight of an exchange between two writers who love their work and appreciate genre and enjoy happiness. And then there was another one, this fall. It’s here. Again, I’ll wait. Okay. So, the above was the first I had ever heard of either Wendig or Sykes, and I instantly became a more-likely fan of both because of […]

Where is this series going? I’m not sure I like it . . .

December 30, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

A character in this wears a “Pobody’s Nerfect” t-shirt*, and that was the thing I was most amused by, so that should tell you my overall feelings about it, if the rating hasn’t already. *PSA: Watch The Good Place. It is a damn delight. This is the first volume of this series that I haven’t really enjoyed in full. Parts of it were engaging but mostly I found it depressing and uninteresting. That may be just me right now, or it might be the series having […]

Riders of the Brohirrim, Ms. Marvel is Our Hero.

December 29, 2017 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I have professed my deep and abiding love for Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel before. Volumes 7 and 8 are why we read comic books. These volumes are what we’ve been growing towards. These are the issues in which Kamala faces the evils in our society, the ones that can’t be entirely super heroed away. This is the dark third act when it looks like everything is lost. After the events during Civil War, Ms. Marvel is on her own and no longer universally loved […]

You can only get soul-crushed so many times a year.

I love my local library. Not only do they carry each Volume of Saga, but they got this copy to me before its official publication date!!!!! This means that I have now read two volumes of Saga in 2017, but the problem is that I have already finished the latest volume of Saga and have to wait who knows how many months for the next one. This is a problem, because Brian K. Vaughan has introduced a MAJOR cliffhanger that bodes a change. A big […]
