A peak into a possible life

March 1, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Raina Telgemeier took her childhood struggles with her sister and adapted them into this funny, and at times touching, graphic novel about the joys and angst of sisterhood.  I have two sisters, however with a twelve year age difference between my first sister and myself, and a fourteen year age difference (plus the complexities of autism) between me and my second sister, with the added complication that I moved away from home when they were seven and five respectively, I’ve never had what I consider […]

Heavier Than You’d Think

February 26, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger Leave a Comment

Lighter Than My Shadow is an exploration of what it is to live with eating disorders and trauma in graphic novel format. In content it’s not all that different from any other memoir on this subject matter, it’s just a different format. But the art both adds and subtracts from the story. The good is the brutal honesty Katie Green uses to describe her childhood issues with food, her descent into disordered eating, her varied experiences with relapse, and how trauma was woven into so […]

Forget it, kid, it’s non-canonical X-Men.

February 16, 2018 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I’ve reviewed Raymond Chandler on CBR. I’ve reviewed X-Men on CBR. I’ve even reviewed comic book noir on CBR. You would think X-Men Noir would be perfect for me. At least, that’s what I thought. After all, the pitch for X-Men Noir is great: Drop the X-Men, and all of their drama, into a gritty mystery from the past. Shuffle the players. Shake it up. See what pours out. Smooth right? Sadly, it ain’t smooth. It’s a kick in the pants.  Jean Grey is dead. She […]

Be Prepared

February 15, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Vera is a typical pre-teen girl: all she wants to fit in with her American friends. But she is just “the poor Russian kid” and different. Her parents are divorced, she cannot afford to go to summer camp and does not have the cool new toys. When she learns about a camp just for Russian kids, she thinks she will finally fit in. But the wilds of suburbia did not prepare her for the wilds of the woods. Based on the authors experiences, poetic license […]

Monstrously wonderful

February 8, 2018 by MrsLangdonAlger 2 Comments

OMG, y’all. This book. Y’all. This. book. Whenever a ton of people tell me I absolutely MUST read a book, I end up getting a little anxious because I’m sure it somehow won’t live up to expectations, and then I’ll get this weird guilt that I must not have “gotten” it and will disappoint everyone by not liking it enough. I’m neurotic, okay? Well, I shouldn’t have had this worry at all with this one. This book is so amazing. It’s empathetic (Ferris clearly understands […]

Best Christmas present EVER!

February 3, 2018 by Lorelei Leave a Comment

I found out about this book from one of my close friends last year but I completely forgot about it until recently. I found it in a Barnes and Nobles and thought that the cover looked really cool and that I heard good things about it previously. When I found it I asked my mom to put it on my Christmas wishlist and I was so happy when my grandparents gave me it for Christmas. There are a total of 13 books in the series and I intend to […]
