3.5/5 stars. The history and breadth of the collection is awesome – you get a lot of bang for the buck. The art is just so embarrassing to carry around I couldn’t give it four stars. That’s my review. As I’ve posted on previous reviews of Ivy-centric books, I kind of fell in love with the morally ambiguous Ivy I first came across in the recent Batman video games. To learn more, I bought this book in the intriguing Batman Arkham series. In this newish series of […]
23: Step Aside, Pops
What is better than Hark! A Vagrant? Why, a second collection of Kate Beaton comics, of course! There isn’t a whole lot to say that would be new from the first collection, but I am going to try my best. Forgive any squeeing I might do, because words don’t do this collection justice. Beaton knows her audience well, and the hits keep coming. Bronte jokes, peasant jokes, revolutionaries, and feminist/suffragette panels abound. Beaton revives her Nancy Drew cover panels, which delighted me to no end. […]
22: Hark! A Vagrant
I’ve seen Kate Beaton comics throughout the internet before, and I’ve greatly enjoyed them. On my library display, someone had emblazoned Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops, so I thought I could use a little literary nerdy fun in my life. It’s clear that Beaton put her history degree and art/museum acumen to good use in her comics, and we are all the better for it. Beaton gets me. There’s just no other way to say it. She makes bountiful history jokes, literary panels, […]
14: A.D.: New Orleans after the Deluge
I’m always seeking to read about real events, and I’m developing a college course on New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. In my research about fiction and nonfiction, A.D.: New Orleans after the Deluge made a lot of lists. I decided to give it a shot, especially because it was also a graphic novel, and I appreciate narratives that merge or bend genres. Josh Neufeld takes into six real-life accounts from different parts of New Orleans: a wealthy doctor, who decides to ride out the storm […]
13: Jane
I read this book almost two months ago. Reading books has been a bit easier this year, but the reviewing seems about four times as difficult as years past. I’ll see what I can do. I do remember picking this up from the library because of name recognition. Aline Brosh McKenna is a powerhouse writer and co-creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which I finally truly began to understand this third season. I was intrigued that McKenna had written a graphic novel based on Jane Eyre, and […]
The Saga continues…again. Volume 4. This is getting serious.
Volume 4 of this incredible series keeps its foot on the gas. Marco and Alana seem to be hitting some problems in their relationship. Okay, yeah, so the entire story hinges on them having to run from multiple groups of people trying to kill them, so it hasn’t really been a cake walk persay, but as a couple, they have been a passionate sexy love bomb for quite awhile. They are starting to fray on the edges, and more tumult is forecast for the couple. […]
