Living in a pretty small, remote town, we make certain to take the kids (yeah…the kids) to a comic book store whenever we are in a bigger city. I walked in to one this winter, and all packaged up just like they knew I was coming, there were the six issues in the limited run World of Wakanda comic series. It hit all the right buttons: Black Panther, so hot right now! Roxane Gay and Yona Harvey, interesting feminist thinker and poet, first two black […]
Big Mushy Happy Lump!
Sarah Anderson is a genius! And Big Mushy Happy Lump (Sarah’s Scribbles #2) is proof of that. As with Adulthood is a Myth and Herding Cats, she mixes humor and seriousness into the life and trials of being Sarah (a young woman going through her twenties and thirties). However, teens can see themselves and forty-somethings, too. Be it our past, present or even future. She cleverly shows us the way of the world (self-esteem issues, love of cats, boyfriends, being cold, clothes, being a woman […]
YOJNE SIHT KOOB!
For you giant dorks who don’t even know a lot about B-level DC Comics heroes, Zatanna Zatara is a very cool magician descended from a long line of magicians. By night, she performs stage shows in Vegas, San Francisco, and all over the world. By…later in night, she fights crime, often of the paranormal variety. You got problems with demons escaped from hell or inter-dimensional monsters? Z’s your girl. As always, my favorite version of this particular DC character is written by the great Paul […]
Superman Vol. 5: Hopes and Fears
Because I don’t keep up with this title, I was a little concerned that I might be at a bit of a loss starting this without having read Vol 4, but I needn’t have worried. Hopes and Fears collects three separate story arcs of the Superman title, and little prior knowledge is required: The Kents go on a road trip over the Fourth of July weekend, taking a break from their daily routine and paying call at various patriotic landmarks. Superman goes toe-to-toe with Parallax, […]
Disney Princess, Twist and Twisted edition
I’m in 2 minds about Ladycastle. First, it’s a fun fairly light fantasy story in which all the men of a town are killed on an expedition except one old knight, which means all the wives and daughters left behind have to take over and do all the work to keep the town safe and running. This includes Merinor, formerly blacksmith’s wife, now King; Aeve, eldest princess, now Knight, and Gwneff, the younger princess who is somewhat tomboyish and somewhat bratty. There’s also some variety […]
Drama, on and off stage, and getting knickers in a twist in real life
Raina Telgemeier is amazing and I wish she had been writing when I was a tween. As it is, I’m happy to be able to give these books to my daughters and enjoy the nostalgia they bring me. Her first two graphic novels are autobiographical, Smile and Sisters. This time around she drew from her life experiences of middle school and doing theater to create an original work titled Drama, and it has lived up to it’s name. In 2015 Drama had the honor of being on the “Most frequently […]
