D&D by any other name will still be D&D

The Last Session Vol. 2: Rerolled by Jasmine Walls

September 18, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Last Session Vol. 2: Rerolled  by Jasmine Walls,  Micah Myers (letterer), Dozerdraws (illustrator) This volume is similar to volume one (The Last Session Vol. 1: Roll for Initiative) with different characters (which is just like a good roleplaying game). The concept is not new (learning to work with each other, speaking up, finding yourself, helping the community, being a good role model) but still is fun and a good read. Bold illustrations fit the story and it is a good read for someone who […]

Dance Dance Dance….

Emma & Capucine, Volume 1 by Jérôme Hamon and Lena Sayaphoum

September 18, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I enjoyed reading the two parts that are inclined in  Emma & Capucine, Volume 1 by Jérôme Hamon and Lena Sayaphoum, I was not able to be WOWed by it. There is nothing new to the events or thoughts happening. However, it is still a nice coming of age story Part One. We deal with growing apart from an older sibling, dealing with a dream not happening, finding new dreams, parents learning to support rather than push for themselves, and jealousy. There are at […]

Not that I need it, but I have a subscription to Silver Sprocket comics/books…..

Witch Hazel: Variety Hour by Colton Fox and Beige Blum

September 18, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have a subscription to Silver Sprocket books. I need to pause and/or cancel as I have so many books from them and I just cannot keep up! But I did get a chance to read Witch Hazel: Variety Hour by Colton Fox and Beige Blum. When I opened the package, stickers and a few postcard items fell out. There was a Witch Hazel poster and another book. I was amused at the fact that the book was in a comic book style, but was […]

Native artists give insight

Dreaming in Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices by Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Beth Leatherdale

September 12, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will start with a slightly controversial statement with my review of  Dreaming in Indian: Contemporary Native American Voices edited by Lisa Charleyboy and Mary Beth Leatherdale: The stories, poetry, essays, photographs and more, are familiar events and journeys that have relatable elements for almost anyone who has ever been an outsider. Regardless of if you are a  minority, I think most people can relate to the prejudices, the destruction of history and faith, and taking the lands of people. And some of the themes […]

Nubia: Too Real by L. L. McKinney

September 9, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when the reader copy you are reading is missing the last 20 pages or so? You holler loudly and say, “Darn you whomever made this reader copy! I need to know what happens in Nubia: Too Real by L. L. McKinney and illustrated by Robyn Smith.” You then say, “Well I guess late September/early October won’t come soon enough!” And then you tell yourself you’ll be first in line to get the finished copy and find out what happens to our […]

The kids aren’t alright. In a funny haha way AND a funny “please see a dr” way.

Ouran High School Host Club, vols. 1-18 by Hatori, Bisco

September 9, 2025 by vega-table Leave a Comment

Bingo Row 1 – School Despite how much manga I read, I don’t read much set in high schools and I can only think of one I’ve read where the school setting is significant. Luckily for hitting the school bingo box, that one was read by me this calendar year. Ouran High School Host Club by Bisco Hatori is an early 2000s manga that is probably somewhere between cult and mainstream classic. I say this based on how available the volumes were at the library. […]
