Hypothesis: The first book will never be as good as subsequent books from an author if you read them out of order

The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

August 17, 2023 by MegsDarcy 16 Comments

I wrote a glowing review of Ali Hazelwood’s newest book a few weeks ago. I liked it so much I picked up the first book the author wrote-  The Love Hypothesis. The Love Hypothesis has many of the aspects I liked about the author – a deep and thorough knowledge of working in STEM and strong female characters with great personalities and interests, as well as interesting male leads and supporting characters. But that’s where many of the similarities end. What I liked about Loathe […]

A thriller about grief that only made me cry a little bit

The Guide by Peter Heller

August 16, 2023 by booktrovert 2 Comments

Peter Heller writes such introspective thrillers. I am not a fisher, and I know very little about the technical terminology related to outdoors activities like hunting, or fishing, or riding horses. At times, it was almost like reading words from another language, and I used context clues to determine that word must refer to a shoe, or that must be another word for a fishing rod. Despite the language barrier, I found myself captivated by this meditation on grief, guilt, mixed with an anti-capitalist thriller […]

Check out that strong Queen

The Discovery of Chess: The Asian Hall of Fame by Phil Amara and Oliver Chin

August 14, 2023 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

I might be physically reaching an age where people start to feel very old; where they have hit a milestone in their life where society says you are not really nifty but your age rhymes. But mentally I am five to 10-years-old depending on the day. And when I was asked by a fellow Cannonballer if I was interested in reviewing a reader copy that was offered to us, I said yes. I was very excited. And the second time this happened (yes, this honor […]

“My child will know they are wanted and that their dad won’t leave them.”

Unexpecting by Jen Bailey

August 14, 2023 by NTE Leave a Comment

If you’re not new to this site, you’re probably aware that I took a less than conventional path to parenting – having stepped in to help raise my niblings after the death of their mom. So I’m no stranger to the complete panic of finding yourself responsible for the complete care & well-being of tiny humans.  But I was a grown woman by the time I had to assume this overwhelming responsibility, and Benjamin Morrison, the main character of Unexpecting by Jen Bailey, is just starting […]

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha

Definitely Not a Comic Book

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha

August 14, 2023 by jomidi 1 Comment

When I read that my local High School had removed the graphic memoir Almost American Girl by Robin Ha from their summer reading list, I had to read it. The school board members called it a comic book. Well, I am sure glad this book hit my radar because it is excellent. I strongly feel that most high school kids would benefit from reading it. Let me start by saying I do not like reading graphic novels. My brain is not wired to enjoy reading […]

Eyyyyy, I’m readin’ a book here!

Brooklyn Noir 2: The Classics by Ed. Tim McLoughlin

August 4, 2023 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR15bingo: You are here. This book is part of the Akhasic Noir series, which does an excellent job at plumbing the depths of urban and/or city-state locations through tales of noir. I picked up Brooklyn Noir 2: The Classics simply because I like the Akhasic Noir series. I enjoyed the first Brooklyn one and other books; there are good stories mixed with bad ones in each of them. But I didn’t have high hopes of getting blown away. I was blown away. I […]
