Highwaywomen, Smugglers, Ghosts, and Dukes

Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain

Chance The Winds of Fortune by Laurie McBain

Dark Before the Rising Sun by Laurie McBain

February 1, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Moonstruck Madness – 4.5 stars (Aug 2022) Sabrina is a lady by day, but by night she rides as a highwayman, trying to keep her family afloat. When she clashes with the Duke of Camareigh, her schemes begin to unravel. There is not as much swashbuckling adventure as you usually get in these old bodice rippers, but that was more than made up for by the genuinely strong-willed heroine and her rather sensible reasons for clashing with the hero. Lucien is rather arrogant though, and […]

Coming-of-age heist story that will steal your heart

Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley

January 30, 2024 by KRussell 2 Comments

Warrior Girl Unearthed is Angeline Boulley’s follow-up to her award-winning debut, Firekeeper’s Daughter, which I loved; I was really excited to return to this world. We go back to the Ojibwe community of Sugar Island and meet our protagonist Perry, 16-year-old niece of Daunis, the primary character in FD. Set ten years after the first novel, Perry’s plans for a relaxing summer are disrupted when she wrecks her car and is forced into a summer internship to repay her Aunt Daunis for covering the cost […]

Excuse me, this wasn’t EVERYTHING. I’ll need a sequel posthaste.

Cunk on Everything: The Encyclopedia Philomena by Philomena Cunk

January 29, 2024 by Travis_J_Smith 8 Comments

Man, listening to audiobooks at 3x speed is nice and all, but when Spotify only allots you a set number of hours per month, and you buy extra hours in increments of 10, you chew through those hours at light speed. In the span of just one day, now, I’ve had to refill my audiobook time on Spotify twice since I was making hours of headway in a third the time. Time flies when you’re having fun… and when things are 3 times as fast! […]

The meter of the poem fired his blood until he was a molten core. The hammer’s song was a charm for living, a way to keep singing himself into existence.

The Winter Knight by Jes Battis

January 29, 2024 by carmelpie 2 Comments

The word eôel meant home turf. People trust home. Through years of investigation, her grandmother had learned that what people told you depended on where you talked to them. Lies for every space, but occasionally a truth snuck its way in.” ― Jes Battis, The Winter Knight When she had interviewed him, she’d traced a discreet rune on his phone case. It was sketchy magic, but it should have given her access to the phone’s GPS. The problem was that it wasn’t working. His location […]

Fall into the sea with Mina

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh

January 24, 2024 by Jana W 2 Comments

I discovered The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea last year, when I was searching for a read that would evoke similar feelings to a Studio Ghibli movie – and this book did not disappoint! Axie Oh’s retelling of the Korean folk tale “The Tale of Shim Ch’ŏng” delivered on its description as a feminist retelling. The heroine was strong, determined, and spoke for herself, without being overshadowed by the powerful male characters who accompanied her journey through the Spirit Realm. Mina is a young […]

“Black History is Black Horror”

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

January 23, 2024 by Bea Pants 2 Comments

Tananarive Due is one of the preeminent voices in Black Horror. The above quote is from her. She authored my favorite haunted house book, The Good House, so she is definitely on my auto read list when she puts out a new book. This latest offering did not disappoint. This book is part horror and part historical fiction which takes place in the Jim Crow South. As you might imagine it’s not an easy read, but it’s extremely worth your time and attention. Robbie Stevens […]
