A veritable feast

Food in England: A complete guide to the food that makes us who we are by Dorothy Hartley

March 15, 2024 by katie 1 Comment

Put simply, this book is the first and last word on absolutely everything to do with traditional English (and British) cooking. I sought it out after a reference to it in, of all things, Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter’s The Long Earth. That small reference was enough to entice me, but did not prepare me for the sheer scale of Hartley’s work. Published in 1954, it’s a magnum opus that’s as much about cookery as it is about history, and traditional country life. For example, […]

An entertaining read for Women’s History month

The Alewives: A Plague-Era Tale of Murder, Friendship and Fine Ale by Elizabeth R. Andersen

March 10, 2024 by ElCicco 3 Comments

Another shout out to Narfna for putting this on my radar. I am your literary stalker! This was a very entertaining murder mystery set in an era that has always fascinated me and featuring a set of unusual sleuths. I’d never read any of Elizabeth Andersen’s books before, but I gather that historical fiction is her thing and setting a murder in the immediate aftermath of the Black Death had me from the get go. Even better, the sleuths in this novel, which I hope […]

No Reunions

There Should Have Been Eight by Nalini Singh

March 6, 2024 by finnyfinfinn 2 Comments

Especially do not attend any reunions that are in memory of a lost friend or are being held in New Zealand.  Between this book, Wellington Paranormal, and Taskmaster NZ I’m starting to be very suspicious of what’s happening on that island. Eight teenagers were the best of friends until everyone’s favorite, Bea, died. Over the next nine years the group has drifted apart but Bea’s sister Darcie has organized a reunion for them at her family’s creepy mansion out in the countryside. It should be […]

A Historical Fantasy That Delivers Both Plot and the Feels

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

February 25, 2024 by Kit Moonstar 1 Comment

Robin Blythe really doesn’t need more complications in his life, so learning magic exists and getting cursed in the same day as well as starting his new job isn’t exactly fantastic.  Especially since someone thinks he know something about what may have gotten his predecessor killed.  Robin can’t help but be a little enchanted by his prickly magical counterpart, Edwin Courcey, though or magic itself.  As the two of them delve into removing the curse on Robin, it quickly becomes clear things are far more […]

All Systems Red

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

February 25, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

All Systems Red is the first book in the Murderbot Diaries, by a huge margin the most enjoyable sci-fi I’ve read in the past few years. It is simple, an easy read, hilarious, and since this is my second time through, holds up on a re-read. Murderbot is a SecUnit, a cyborg made from robotic parts and cloned tissues for use on the Corporation Rim, a loose conglomerate of corporate entities at the edge of space-faring civilization. Most corporations are complete assholes, with frequent use […]

Is Destiny A Choice?

Red String Theory by Lauren Kung Jessen

February 24, 2024 by RevGirlUtena Leave a Comment

I was given an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. Rooney Gao is an artist who feels she has always lived in the shadow of her famous artist mother. Her mother’s breakthrough piece was a live video of the birth of her daughter, Rooney. Rooney feels that because of her notoriety since birth, she has to create under the alias, Red String Girl (RSG). RSG’s creations all use red string to convey messages about destiny and interconnectedness. Rooney believes strongly in […]
