Weird Black Girls by Elwin Cotman

Weird Black Girls by Elwin Cotman

February 14, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

I thought this was a good collection. Per usual, I rate overall and then for each story in the collection. Trigger warning: Rape I feel really bad I accidentally dropped this one in the bathtub the other day. I was reading (as one does) and then slip! And now it’s dry, but definitely a little swollen. Oh well! “The Switchin Tree”(5 stars)-I really liked this story that follows a young girl named Man whose family and community gets turned upside down in 1958. The children […]

Just like any mother and child, except, you know they are vampires

Noss and Zakuro Vol. 1 by Rariatto

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One day you find yourself finding a book called Noss and Zakuro Vol. 1 by Rariatto. It is just a few words on the screen but you find yourself interested. Until you are not. Then later it comes up again. But again, only a brief interest happened. This repeated itself several times before you found yourself interlibrary loan requesting it. Only to learn that your local library had it most of that time to begin with.  So you request it and a few days later […]

I keep telling myself, “I do not like horror…..”

Hide: The Graphic Novel by Kiersten White and Scott Peterson.

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I keep telling myself, I do not like horror. Yet, I keep picking up horror related books, and did so with Hide: The Graphic Novel. It is adapted from the novel by Kiersten White, illustrated by Veronica Fish and Andy Fish, with the adaptation by Scott Peterson. Now it isn’t “gory horror” but yes, there is gore (it is about 14 people trying to survive the “game” and well, the stakes are pretty high). It is icky and there is blood. But you know, tastefully […]

The ghosts with the most

Gilbert and the Ghost  by Heather Pierce Stigall

February 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ghost stories are nice year round. Especially if they have a theme that is about something other than the greatest holiday ever, Halloween. The below books have ghosts in unique and fun ways.  I do not know why 632 Savannah Street is an important fact to have in the story of Gilbert and the Ghost by Heather Pierce Stigall  and illustrated by Jess Mason (due mid-August 2025, read via an online reader copy),  but I’m sure when you read it, you’ll figure out what I missed.  […]

“You should tell her, the knight interjects, that is basically the entire point of math. Explaining stuff everyone already knows.”

The Sunlit Man by Brandon Sanderson

February 13, 2025 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Original review: NOW IT IS TIME FOR WIND AND TRUTH (but I have another two weeks to wait) Updated long review: First off, I had a whole thing written and it got lost on Goodreads, how bizarre. Doesn’t it save automatically? So well to quickly recap (and I won’t give away who the main character/Nomad is until later on, if you want to avoid): – it’s funny how there’s SO MUCH plot crammed into these small novels between the giant paving stones (and really, they […]

Book 2: Villains be villainous.

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

February 13, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 3 Comments

Book 2 of ??? in this year’s Robin Hobb journey! I liked this one. I didn’t like it as much as the first one, but it’s still a solid 4 stars. The Pace of Assassin’s Apprentice  felt like slow and deliberate because we were getting to know Fitz, setting up the other characters, laying groundwork for other pieces of the narrative, getting to know the lay of the land, literally. Royal Assassin felt, weirdly, a little slower to me, in a more frustrating way. Like […]
