Happy endings are for grown-ups too

Greenteeth by Molly O'Neill

April 1, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I am now convinced that “cozy” basically means there will be tropes generally presented in an entertaining way, and that while drama of various sorts is an option, most all will be well in the end. Basically, happy endings are now allowed in “adult” fiction. Exhibit 1: Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill. I actually picked this up in an airport bookshop (the kind where you can return it within 6 months for a partial refund, but in my case, it was kind of an exchange, so […]

What is a detective’s favorite fruit? Clue-berries.

Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast V07 Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery by Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney

April 1, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Josh Funk and Brendan Kearney had me at Miss Maple and lost me at gummy bugs! Okay, well, they didn’t lose me, just made me pause. But then they had me again at Elvis Parsley.  This seventh addition to the Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast series, Whodonut?: A Holiday Mystery is a fun, cute and different holiday story. While the “Who Dun-it” aspect and the idea of the last book in a series is not new, the way Funk and Kearney presents things is […]

The case of the disappearing ghosts

Installment Immortality by Seanan McGuire

March 31, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While October Daye is my favorite series from Seanan McGuire, I quite enjoy the InCryptid series. The biggest thing with these is that she switches narrators throughout the series – sometimes it is quite fun to get a new perspective but other times, I also wish to go back to other narrators. As a result, these can be a little more hit or miss me for me. Since Verity was the first narrator, I think she might still be one of my favorites but I […]

How the legend might have started with books before lattes

Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree

March 30, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

What’s cozy in the same way as a latte? Second-hand books. That’s what we get with Bookshops & Bonedust, and I’m down with that. This is a pretty good prequel, but it can be done as a stand-alone, and it also does a nice job of maybe setting up volume 3. The whole story starts with young and eager Viv getting ahead of herself and getting injured in a fight. The rest of her team leaves her behind to recover in middle of nowhere Murk, […]

Part 2 problems but not really that bad

Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer

March 30, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Cozy streak incoming. First up: Apprentice to the Villain. This is definitely a part two, in that it’s still a good continuation of the story, but it focuses on developing the big problems to be resolved later. That means there is less character development, and a lot more emphasis on mutual pining, which really gets irritating. The general lack of clear communication causing misunderstandings and problems in romance is a main reason I don’t read a lot of that, because it’s so very avoidable. Do […]
