Where Men Are the Worst, and Menopause Gives You Magic Powers

The Change by Kirsten Miller

May 20, 2025 by RouletteGirl Leave a Comment

In a quiet Long Island town, three women of a certain age discover that they have more power than they ever thought possible. Jo, a former hotel executive, owns a women-only gym, and has hot flashes that can literally set things on fire. Nessa is a retired nurse who can hear the dead calling to her and see their unsettled shades. And Harriet? Well, Harriet hasn’t left her house in months, her garden has turned into a wild place full of unsettling plants, and there […]

The Good Stuff.

Peter and Wendy/ Margaret Ogilvy by J. M. Berrie

May 18, 2025 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

No pic, sorry!  Old book. This volume, which I picked up in an estate sale somewhere, is an old one, published in 1913.  It features an account of the author’s mother, Margaret Ogilvy (which was written in 1896), as well as the original version of Peter Pan.  As far as the former goes, we meet his mum as a widowed Scot with a devious turn of mind and not a care in the world as to what anyone thinks of her.  That was fun. But […]

Houyhnhnms and Dragons

Moonbound by Robin Sloan

May 18, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ve had Moonbound on my TBR shelf physically for a while. It’s also been long enough that I don’t remember hardly anything about Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore (first big hit, by this author). I remember that I really enjoyed both Mr. Penumbra and the follow-up, but not direct sequel, Sourdough. I vaguely remember both of the earlier books as vaguely magical realism, and overall entertaining but Moonbound seems to be something a little different. The power of story and narrative is major theme, and it […]

Generally Entertaining but I have Questions

Notorious Sorcerer by Davina Evans

May 18, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I don’t often read on the Kindle app; I prefer having a paper object that I don’t’ have to worry about charging or breaking, and that doesn’t keep me up late with screen brain buzz. However, sometimes when there’s a sale on something interesting, I might on rare occasions download an ebook. I’d forgotten about Notorious Sorcerer, but for some reason, I opened the app, and decided that’s what I wanted to read. This story is sort of cozy, fantasy, a little romance, and adventure. […]

I was just saying I don’t do re-reads usually, but then I went and read this again.

Mage and the Endless Unknown by S.J. Miller

May 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In October 2023 I read Mage and the Endless Unknown by S.J. Miller. I thought I had read it before when I saw it on the (sadly) to be returned cart at work in May 2025. But I figured even if I had read it, I didn’t remember when and a second reading wouldn’t hurt. Fairly quickly I remembered a lot of it, but then there were places that I did not remember at all (I am looking at you the pretty-not-so-nice ghosts) and wondered […]

Get A LOT of boxes of tissues

Yumi and Monster by Kam Redlawsk

May 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Get your boxes of tissues and then you can read Yumi and Monster by Kam Redlawsk. Due in September 2025 I read this via an online reader copy. And while I am curious how the finished copy will look, I am not sure I can read this bittersweet picture book. Yumi is a little girl who loves to play, but both her parents and the doctors say that will change. One day she is given a cane to help her walk (only we don’t hear […]
