Exactly What I Wanted It To Be

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I’m not going to kid you, I have no objectivity when it comes to Sarah Addison Allen. Her Southern-set books depicting strong women with a little bit of magic prevailing over all that ails them are exactly my cup of peppermint tea. Other Birds is her first book in years, and to say I’ve been eagerly awaiting it is to grossly understate the case. Following Zoey as she moves to Mallow Island, South Carolina, the story is magical, romantic, whimsical and absolutely charming.  You know, […]

How Did I Sit On This For So Long?

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit 1 Comment

Holy wow, The Interwebs were 100% right about this being good.  It is so beautifully written, and everyone should read it. [Actually, this book is one of the reasons I cut a friend out of my life.  She refused to read it because it was queer fiction.  I’m too old to keep friends like that.] So.  Wow.  Sorya is a princess, locked in a tower.  Well, like half the penthouse floor of a castle, so it’s not a Rapunzel situation.  She’s got an awesome garden […]

I Cannot Wait To Read More

Lore by Alexandra Bracken

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Boy, did I like this.   I finished it in a face mask at 10pm despite knowing I had to get up at 4am in the morning. Lore is your typical spiky female who has had to do it tough protagonist – we meet her beating the living crap out of some guy who threw his toxic masculinity over the wrong chick.  Her second fight is with someone from her past, with whom she’s clearly been yearning to reconnect. When she goes home, it all. Kicks. […]

Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort

A trio of romances featuring a rockstar, small town angst, and magical cooking

Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort

Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn

Basil and Oregano by Melissa Capriglione

December 31, 2023 by teresaelectro 4 Comments

CBR15 Passport Challenge: New to you Authors – Jen Comfort, Kate Clayborn, and Melissa Capriglione Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort is a gender-flipped remix of Phantom of the Opera. Erika Greene seemingly had it all when taking on a lead Broadway role. She was a bit of a minx and slept with someone’s boyfriend, which led to a production light falling on her. She retreats to her family’s dilapidated opera house in Paris, Nevada, and vows to become a better person. She had a decent plastic surgeon […]

Supernatural Investigations

Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston

Amari and the Great Game by B. B. Alston

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I read these because CBR told me to, actually.  I asked my sister if the Best Niece in Australia had read them, and she’d never heard of it, so I took it upon myself to read and recommend in turn. My fellow CBR-er was correct – these are really good. Amari’s brother is missing.  He told the family he’d found a job right out of school, and then bam! gone.  Their family is from “the wrong side of the tracks,” so everyone assumes he’s run […]

Was This A NaNoWriMo Piece?

Persephone by Kitty Thomas

December 31, 2023 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

Officially my Worst Book of the Year. Thumbnail notes: I didn’t like this much.  Started strong, got distracted, then finished like there was a deadline.  Was it a NaNoWriMo piece?
