A Fey with some actual character makes some bargains with sometimes interesting results

The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss

January 10, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Full disclosure: I have only read book 1 of the Kingkiller Chronicles so far, although book 2 is physically on my tbr shelf. I have also not read the first novella set in that world, nor do I subscribe to the author’s fan sites/newsletters/Patreon/etc; I only follow a couple of (free) social media accounts. The Narrow Road Between Desires is a revision/extension of a previously published short story, per the author’s note as well as some commentary on the book’s Goodreads page; I might have […]

“That’s all in the name of good drama. The past is boring anyway.”

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

January 10, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

Tress of the Emerald Sea is set in a fantasy world that has pirates and trade routes in the oceans, but there aren’t oceans. They are instead spores, and if these spores come into contact with water, they explode in different ways. Most of these ways will kill you. Tress, the main character, loves collecting cups and talking to her friend Charlie. Then she realizes he may be more than a friend, at which point Charlie is sent off to find a bride. Tress embarks […]

A Worthy Sequel (For Once)

Painted Devils by Margaret Owen

January 9, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

I read Painted Devils because it’s the second book in the series, and I loved Little Thieves. This book is completely worth it, and it’s definitely one of the better sequels of all the series’ I’ve read. This is the sequel to Little Thieves, and it’s set in the same world. Painted Devils is a fantasy setting, not too advanced in terms of technology but there are trade and politics, which are well developed as well. This book shows Vanja as she accidentally starts a cult, […]

This book stole my heart

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

January 8, 2024 by Marcella 4 Comments

I read Little Thieves by Margaret Owen because of a recommendation from a bookstore, and it seemed very interesting to me. The story is set in a fantasy medieval setting, there is trade and politics, but no heavily advanced technology. This book is the story of a girl who after being taken in by the gods Death and Fortune, is then given to a noble family where she becomes a serving girl. She, for reasons to be found, takes the spot of a soon to be […]

Fantastic Fantasy!

Faebound by Saara El-Arifi

January 8, 2024 by LB Leave a Comment

Saara El-Arifi immediately place herself on my auto-buy list with her debut, and this new world she’s created just confirms why I love her storytelling. The book starts with a myth telling of the three gods: Asase, the Wheat, god of the earth and creator of humans; Ewia, the two-headed Bat, god of the sun and creator of fae: and Bosome, the Water, god of the moon and creator of the elves. As far as anyone is aware, all that remains in the world are […]

Light Frothy Romance With Italian Flavor

The Fae's Bride by R. L. Medina

January 7, 2024 by Kit Moonstar Leave a Comment

Alessia is busy taking care of her family and doesn’t have time for romance, even though her mother is pushing to use some of their hard earned coin to go to the matchmaker.  Massimo is a new count visiting their village, despite his fae heritage, and under pressure to get married within a year.  As soon as they meet for the first time, Massimo’s smitten.  But Alessia has plenty on her plate despite her attraction to Massimo, and he’ll have his work cut out for […]
