Bike’s First Day

A Big Day for Bike by Emily Jenkins

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had planned on writing a review with all four of the bicycle books I liked from a recent article I found in one review. I did not think I could write enough for each book to have justice done for it. But with The Bicycle: How an Act of Kindness Changed a Young Refugee’s Life, I just got all excited over it. And even if that review (or any of the others here) does not make sense, just know READ THE DARN (only I’m […]

Bring Back My Color

The Gray City by Torben Kuhlmann

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While it was hard to put down, the pacing of the not-so-picture book The Gray City is a bit slow. Each chapter is only a few pages long (and as read via an online reader copy I am not sure of the final format size) but the page is filled. And even when everything is gray there is still color, hinting at the revelation our heroine, Robin, learns at the end of things.  This story unfolds, as said, a bit slowly. Torben Kuhlmann wants you […]

The might stand a ghost of a chance

All the Lovely Bad Ones Graphic Novel: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

All the Lovely Bad Ones Graphic Novel: A Ghost Story (novel by Mary Downing Hahn) and adapted by Scott Peterson, Naomi Franquiz, Brittany Peer and  Joamette Gil is probably my favorite of the novels by Hahn turned graphic novel. And their Wait Till Helen Comes was always a favorite book, so you’d think that adaptation would be my favorite, but there was something about this one that captured me. It probably was because Helen had been a favorite, and therefore, nothing lives up to it, […]

What lurks in the corn

The Girl in the Corn by Jason Offutt

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I’m starting my review of The Girl in the Corn, with the that there are big time TRIGGERS in this book. After all, it’s a horror book and therefore there are several horror images. Perhaps they could be more so, but even what they do show (such as the murder of a child, the brutal murder of the dog and several other people, plus drug use/abuse, guns, kidnapping, sex, and what I consider rape) is not pleasant to say the least, and, of course could […]

Whimsy and Whoa

If You Want  to Ride a Horse by Amy Novesky

Perla The Mighty Dog by Isabel Allende

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Picture book round up part… I have lost track! As they are so much fun I just read and read and read….. I am sure if I piled them up they would tower over me a few times over! All were read via an online copy, but both are currently available.  The publisher’s description of, If You Want  to Ride a Horse, says it is “A whimsical guide through the steps of riding a horse, whether the horse is real or lives in the imagination” […]

Coming to America

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra, with illustrations by Tiffani Brown is set up as if The Addams Family were from today, a lot more modern (though their understanding of things still not the same as “normies”), plus were actual vampires. This is a fun and sweet book. The silly and clever retelling of a fitting in theme has been done before, but the humor this time around makes it fresh. The characters are maybe a bit of caricatures (there is […]
