A Wild And Hungry Place by EE Ottoman

New England Gothic Horror

A Wild and Hungry Place by EE Ottoman

October 17, 2025 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I am not a brave soul when it comes to horror, so it is a recommendation in itself that I finished EE Ottoman’s A Wild and Hungry Place. Did I read this with my hands over my eyes at times? Yes I did. Did I actually enjoy the creepy tension? Surprisingly, yes. It is gorgeous and genuinely scary. There is a curse, poisonings, stabbings, cannibalism, ghosts, lycanthropy, and something that should have been left slumbering undisturbed. Cricket is newly widowed and invites herself to live with […]

“Travelling Through Thick Woods With a Troop of Goblins Is Not Unlike a Nature Hike With a Group of Grumpy Toddlers With Weapons”

Nine Goblins by T Kingfisher

October 17, 2025 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I’ve been reading some pretty heavy books recently, and have been writing some rather hefty reviews to match. So I’ve decided to tackle something a little bit lighter this time, and T Kingfisher has provided.  Nine Goblins is basically the story of two people trying to do their very best: Sergeant Nessilka, leader to her goblin cohort, and Sings-to-Trees the elven veterinarian. The goblins have been at war with the humans for quite awhile; pushed out of their own lands with nowhere else to go, […]

“Gods are among us and they care nothing and are nothing like us.”

Kraken by China Mieville

October 16, 2025 by stegolily Leave a Comment

Cannonball Read Bingo: Black This. book. has. everything.  Sentient tattoos, supernatural picket lines, spearguns, squid cults, invisible truffle pigs, and human origami. What’s human origami, you ask? It’s that thing of when you use magic to fit an adult man into a envelope and then send  him in the mail to one of your enemies. Kraken is a police procedural, and a horror novel, and a fantasy satire.  But mostly it’s about the end of the world. It follows the misadventures of Billy Harrow, a […]

Dire Bound by Sable Sorenson is a Romantasy based in a world where humans pair up with enormous dire wolves to fight off the siphons, a nation of vampire-like creatures. As Dire Bound opens, Meryn is working in a laundry by day and underground fighting by night for extra cash. She is the sole support of her mentally ill mother and younger sister, Saela. Her sister is the bright shining light in her life. Her father was killed years ago in the war with the […]

Two Political Fantasy Books

The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince by Robin Hobb

The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty

October 13, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

cbr17bingo – Citizen (for The Kingdom of Copper, in which the shafit are second class citizens) The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince How does Robin Hobb do it? This novella is told in a straightforward, fairy tale-type manner, with relatively little dialogue, and it was still so engaging. I will admit, though, that I had some idea of what was coming. I vaguely recalled a brief mention of what happened to the Piebald Prince in The Farseer Trilogy, so part of the reason I was engrossed […]

We’re Wolves

Mate by Ali Hazelwood

October 13, 2025 by NatalieH 2 Comments

CBR Bingo: ‘Black’ The last few Ali Hazelwood books I’ve read have been sort of hit-or-miss for me. I enjoyed Not in Love, was conflicted about Problematic Summer Romance, and hated Check & Mate (it wasn’t a bad book perse, I just don’t think I was the intended audience). I do however really enjoy her writing style, and I’ve been cautiously optimistic about Mate, recently released and the follow-up to last year’s Bride (which was actually the first book of hers that I read). The narrator […]
