Jelinas Reviews Cannonball #1: A Worthy Homage to Horror

January 28, 2014 by Jelinas Leave a Comment

There’s fanfic, and then there’s homage. Fanfic is usually written to satisfy the writer; filled with the fan’s desires of what he’d like to see come to pass. Since the focus is the writer’s satisfaction, it often happens that no one but the writer is satisfied after reading. Then there’s homage, which is written to honor the original work. Any true fan can appreciate a good homage, and it may even succeed in converting the uninitiated. Boogeymen

KayKay #CRB6 Review #05 Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

January 26, 2014 by UniverseInMe 2 Comments

I can not say how much praise I have heard about this book, and how many times I’ve picked up the sample and not finished it.  Finally, and with determination, I set out to at least finish the sample.  This time I finished the sample and the entire book, and I’m glad I did.  The beginning is a bit violent (rape, murder, etc. etc.) but the rest of the book didn’t feel as extreme.  Prince Jorg is definitely an anti-hero, but I still cheered for him.  I enjoyed this […]

Kivrin, a historian and student at Oxford in 2054, plans a trip to the Middle Ages using the well-established technology of “the net.” She must do extensive research in order to blend in with the locals. The history department’s technicians must perform complex calculations to get her to the right location. Her instructors carefully set up a rendezvous to bring her back. No one has ever traveled to the fourteenth century before. Kivrin’s favorite professor, Mr. Dunworthy, is deeply worried for her. However, Kivrin has […]

The Return of the Dunk, The Revenge of the Egg

January 25, 2014 by narfna Leave a Comment

NOTE: As with the first two in the series, I read The Mystery Knight as part of an anthology. In this case, it was Warriors, edited by George R.R. Martin himself along with some dude named Gardner Dozois, who I’ve never heard of before. Unlike with the other two anthologies, Warriors for the most part consists of original fiction by authors that is not tied in to their previous works. This means little fear of spoilers, so I’m going to read it and do a […]
