After a serious fantasy read of The Blade Itself, I decided to try something a little lighter, which was perfect because I have the new Lucy Valentine book Undeniably Yours. It’s the fifth in the series of books centered around the gifted Valentine family. Most of the family can see auras and help people find true love based on that. Lucy was struck by lightening and lost the ability to see auras, but she can find lost objects (she gets ‘reads’ from their owners) and she can get visions of what a person […]
The gang comes together
Joe Abercrombie gets a lot of positive reviews for his writing. A while back I tried to read his ‘Best Served Cold’ novel, but I could not get into it. I read his short story ‘Tough Times All Over’ in Rogues and I thought it was a great read. Given that and his reputation, I decided to try The Blade Itself. I did enjoy this book, the characters and the writing. My biggest complaint is that there wasn’t enough plot movement. Even in epic […]
Mirror, Mirror
“Light is the left hand of darkness and darkness the right hand of light.” An envoy, Ai, from outer space arrives at a planet create an alliance between them and the planet Winter. This new society differs vastly from his own; the inhabitants are bisexual and enter kemmer where there sex changes to either male or female and they may procreate. Every citizen has the possibility of becoming pregnant and there is no difference in who might carry which task. This premise in itself is […]
Great start to a new series…
I’m a big fan of Rachel Aaron’s Eli Monpress series. I enjoyed her Paradox series, and so far (for me) this Heartstricker series falls in the middle. I think this series is YA, at least the main character is a kid (only 20 something in dragon years), but it made no difference. It was different, it was fun and I enjoyed seeing Julius (the main character) come into his own. The best part is that Rachel Aaron writes really fast and the next book in the series is coming out later this […]
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
I listened to this one as an audiobook, which was particularly fun, because Lynn Redgrave read it aloud, and her fancy, old lady British voice was so wonderful it practically put a good taste in my mouth. Inkheart (which was also turned into a movie with Brendan Fraser that wasn’t supposed to be very good, which makes sense, because as much as much as I love Brendan Fraser, he would be terrible in the lead role of Mo and my god I’ve got an issue […]
A great end to a trilogy
You know one of the best things about pre-ordering a book for your Kindle? If it’s done far enough in advance, you may completely forget about it and then bam! Surprise book that you really want to read!
