I love paranormal and urban fantasy. No matter how many times I get burned I keep going back to the well. I will even keep going with a series until I reach a point of self loathing – please see last year’s review of this series. Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series came recommended by the lovely Malin, and when Malin makes a recommendation, you should at least give it a try. Malin’s recommendation came shortly before the final book of the series was published. I […]
Vampires, and vampires, and more vampires
I’m now halfway through the Vampire Academy series with Book 3: Shadow Kiss (2008) by Richelle Mead, and I’m hooked. I have to find out what happens, I have to finish this series, and it’s likely going to happen soon. Well, pretty soon. I’ve got some other books to read, too. These books aren’t great literary masterpieces, but they’re fun and entertaining. Even though this last book dragged a bit in the middle, it’s still easy, engaging reading. Mead has created a world where there […]
If you go into the woods today, beware the bunnies (and all the other animals)
Nurse Letitia “Tish” Everett has only really started recovering from her very controlling, emotionally and physically abusive fiancee Jeff, when she’s drawn to a tarnished antique locket at an estate sale and actually ends up shocking herself by stealing it. After managing to force it open, she is splashed by luminous crimson liquid. Inside the locket, there is a portrait of a darkly handsome man she think of as a “naughty Mr. Darcy” and a foreign inscription of some kind. Falling asleep with the locket […]
Landline
I love Rainbow Rowell; in the past four months I have read every book she has written. She is a Goddess who can do no wrong and breaks my heart in the best ways. Unfortunately, I don’t feel the love for Landline like some of the other people on CBR. Please don’t shun me! Let’s start with what I did like: This a book for adults. The main character is a mid-thirties, married mother of two. She has a career in television and is trying […]
“Everywhere’s been where it is ever since it was first put there. It’s called geography.”
I’ve made my first foray into Discworld. There was an article on io9 that described the best way to turn your friend into a fan of your particular fandom. If I didn’t know better I would swear a couple of my friends either read or possibly even ghostwrote this article specifically about getting me reading this expansive fantasy series. I spent much of my life not reading Fantasy. I don’t know why exactly, but I feel it has something to do with having a tough […]
Now & Then by Jacqueline Sheehan
Double Cannonball! Woo! This book was…meh. It was…inoffensive. Well, that’s not true. I was offended by the fact that it could have been a great story, but the author had apparently never heard human beings having conversations, and therefore delivered some of the most stilted dialogue I’ve ever read. And the method/reason for the time travel started out cool, then got stupid. Fast. That’s offensive because in the hands of someone else, it could have been great! (read: in the hands of Diana Gabaldon, this […]
