Witch Hazel: Seasons of the Witch by Colton Fox and Beige Blum

October 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few months ago, my Silver Sprocket subscription selections mostly hit the mark. One that was really good was the Witch Hazel series by Colton Fox and Beige Blum. The one I read was a stand alone, but also a continuation of three others. The first aptly named, Witch Hazel, the second Witch Hazel Trouble at TCAF (or One Shot, I’ve seen both) and the third Witch Hazel: Seasons of the Witch. (Or that is the second and TCAF is the third … I am […]

Royal Assassin: Book 2 of The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

October 28, 2025 by ElCicco 1 Comment

The thing about second books in trilogies is that they have to do a lot of work developing conflicts and characters. Second books tend to be where the bad guys are ascendent and our heroes seem to be losing. They provide critical information and often are kind of depressing. Royal Assassin, the second volume in The Farseer Trilogy, is such a book but I am completely invested, as well as devastated, by what is happening to our main characters and the kingdom where they live. […]

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

October 27, 2025 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I am so torn about the rating of The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton. Part of me was won over by the interesting world Clayton created where people are born alike, with red eyes and grey skin, and hair the texture of straw. What is considered “beauty” – a variety of skin tones, hair colors and types, and body shapes – does not come naturally unless they are a Belle. The Belles have the ability through their arcana (think natural magic ability) to change people’s appearances, but not their own. All varieties are considered various degrees of beautiful, but of course like […]

The Inheritance by Ilona Andrews

CBR17 Bingo: Free (swapping out Migrant) In a world pretty much like our own, people were just going about their ordinary lives when suddenly, everything changed. Gigantic portals to some other mystical dimension began opening all over the world. It soon became clear that if the portals were left unattended for a while, hordes of horrific monsters emerged and proceeded to wreak havoc. Once specialised teams started breaching the gates, they discovered each portal contained a lot of rare and valuable minerals and resources, as […]

Am I losing my sense of humor, or is Christopher Moore losing his?

Anima Rising by Christopher Moore

CBR 17 BINGO: Arts, because Gustav Klimt and his contemporaries figure into the plot Double BINGO! Across: Arts, Borrow, Citizen, Work, White Diagonal: Arts, Red, N, Diaspora, Rec’d I’ve been a Christopher Moore fan for a long time. (Who doesn’t love Lamb and The Stupidest Angel?) Not all his novels are brilliant, and even in my own household we don’t always agree on what works and what doesn’t (I love Fool and its sequels, while my husband doesn’t care for them at all; he loves […]

Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher

October 24, 2025 by stegolily 1 Comment

Bingo: I am using this for the “Red” Bingo square. because the cover is red. Istvhan is a former berserker, a paladin left without a god. Clara is a were-nun from an order of shapeshifting sisters. He is on the trail of a mysterious killer; she is on a mission to rescue her kidnapped sisters. As their quests bring them together, they will face bandits, creepy rabbits, living crockery, gladiator pits, and maybe (just maybe) emotional vulnerability. This was a fun addition to T. Kingfisher’s […]
