Harry Potter punches Loki in the face

On Punching Gods and Absentee Dads by Enigmaris

February 15, 2021 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This is a review of a straight-up crossover fanfiction, so beware, all ye who enter here! As you can probably guess from the title, this is a Harry Potter/Avengers crossover.  Now, I read a lot of fanfiction, and I go through them fairly quickly.  I’m not in the habit of writing reviews on the actual works, let alone 250+ words on Cannonball (I know, bad habit).  But this one deserves it!  (Also, it’s not smutty!) After the death of Sirius, Harry receives a delayed […]

Spoiler Alert is in full effect

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade

January 21, 2021 by katie71483 4 Comments

Do yourself a favor. Get thee to Amazon or your favorite bookstore and purchase Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade as soon as you can. It’s going to be one of your favorites and will absolutely be one of those books you read over and over. Or you’ll keep buying copies so you can loan it to more friends. I’ll admit it: I didn’t want to pay the $14 Kindle was asking, so when I read that they’re dropped the price to $4, I was like […]

If It Walks Like a Duck and Talks Like a Duck (and Does Autocorrect Ducking Things)

(won't you let me) walk you home from school by somethingdifferent

After postcardsandbooks‘ post I am newly emboldened to publicly review fanfiction! I feel like doing so will also clarify my review of Bloodline, not that it was fooling anyone. First, rules, both my own ones and the ones that I am sticking with re: reviewing. No less than 5:1 ratio for books : fanworks (and honestly I reviewed two fanworks** last year in the course of reading 130 books, I am not often called to write page-long reviews) (although I always comment!) It’s okay for […]

Owl Was Well by fencer_x

I have long been an avid fanfiction reader. I discovered it in 1999 when I was still in high school and for the past 20+ years I have gone through bouts of reading nothing but fanfiction for a single pairing for months/years on end. According to my iBooks stats (where I download most fics from AO3 in epub format), I have read 163 fics in 2020 and 146 in 2019. And to this day, no book I ever read has had the same immediately uplifting […]

A classic

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

December 31, 2020 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

The first time I heard of this book was fifth grade. It was one of the choices for our book reports. I think I didn’t read it because it was about a girl. Boy, was I dumb. I saw the movie when it came out but I didn’t read it for myself until this year. Three things struck me about it. First, was that the author did not pull punches with her vocabulary. I read later that she did not consider it to be “just […]

Very satisfying Sherlock Holmes pastiche, with bonus Jack the Ripper.

Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson by Lyndsay Faye

December 30, 2020 by narfna 1 Comment

I would not be lying if I say that this is the best Sherlock Holmes novel I’ve ever read, and that’s including the actual Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have some thoughts about why this is, none moreso than ACD never seemed to love his characters as much as other people did, and the popularity and lovabilty of the character has maintained, even grown in some circles, in the one hundred years since he first appeared in the pages of […]
