Pie became politicized and racially charged

Sweet Land of Liberty: A History of America in 11 Pies by Rossi Anastopoulos

October 17, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Sweet Land of Liberty is a history with some recipes. As a lover of food and a lover of weird deep dives into history, this is definitely up my alley. I appreciated that Anastopoulos acknowledges the limitations of her hook, but really embraces it. Her chapters cover social movements, race relations, gender roles, industrialization of food, marketing, identity, and national mythology as those things play out through pie. It took me a few flip throughs and chapters to settle into what Rossi Anastopoulos is doing […]

Irony for Breakfast after Your Run

Rise & Run: Recipes, Rituals, and Runs to Fuel Your Day by Shalane Flanagan, Elyse Kopecky

October 16, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 21: Rec’d I run and so a good bit of my social media connections relate to that; about a month ago, a gal on my local women’s running group posted that her favorite cookbook series was on Kindle sale; a handful of the other ladies voiced their support/intent to purchase this title. I’d heard of it before, so I figured, why not? I have to admit, I hadn’t quite made the connection that Rise and Run: Recipes, Rituals, and Runs to Fuel Your Day […]

To keep or not to keep that is the question

The Baby-Changing Station by Rhett Miller

October 5, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Forty odd years ago I was asked if I wanted a baby brother or sister. I said sister. I named my new baby doll Baby Sister.  I was into it.  Few weeks after the ol’ sibling came I looked at my mom and said, “Send her back. I want a brother.” I was informed it didn’t work that way. But if I had The Baby-Changing Station like our character in this Rhett Miller book, I would have picked the guitar. Whatever do you mean? You […]

A heartwarming story about poop

I Eat Poop: A Dung Beetle Story by Mark Pett

September 30, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You might not want to recommend this book out loud in a group of mixed company as you will get a few looks, giggles, and teasing. I Eat Poop: A Dung Beetle Story is your “kid eats an odd food, is afraid he will be teased like (you will learn as we go along) his ex-best friend, and the lesson he learns about being himself.”  This time it is just with a dung beetle and other creatures. There is kid humor, and at the end […]

‘Grilled Cheese’ sounds more appealing the ‘Fried Cheese’ Sandwich

The Great Grilled Cheese Book by Eric Greenspan

September 29, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Bingo 17: Funky The Great Grilled Cheese Book contains some funk; funky cheese (I’m thinking the ‘blue cheese’ chapter, and kind of a relaxed funk (as in the music style) vibe in general. I know the author, Chef Eric Greenspan, from tv, and he seems like the chill sort of guy who would (and did) put together something that is more like guidelines as opposed to strict recipes. So, onto the cheese. Probably the coolest thing in the whole book is a recipe for diy […]

Pizza, outdoors and friends

Pizza My Heart (Norma and Belly, #3 by Mika Song

Expedition Backyard by Rosemary Mosco

September 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A slice of pizza or an adventure with a lion? Which do you prefer? Well, if you like to read, you do not have to choose!  You can pick up either of the early-to-mid-readers for you and your child/children. Both books are aimed at least ages five and up to be read to, but at least six and up could start reading solo (and/or assistance). Pizza My Heart (Norma and Belly, #3) by Mika Song is a series that is still cute, but for the adult […]
