When is 8 not really 8?

The Vegan 8 by Brandi Doming

May 19, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

The Vegan 8 claims that it contains “100 simple, delicious recipes made with 8 ingredients or less.” This is not entirely true. The introduction says there are 3 free ingredients: salt, pepper, and water. This is fair, but then if you look at the recipes, there are many which actually either cheat by separating into multiple recipes that combine or try to suggest that things like black pepper corns and ground pepper are the same thing. It may be in the letter or the rule, […]

A cup of potato

Luli and the Language of Tea by Marie Aang

The Pet Potato by Josh Lacey

May 10, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In a recent picture book reading marathon I came out with four books under my belt. Since there was a lot to say about each one, I split the reviews into two. This is officially the second, but you can read them either way. Now, I was trying to come up with a theme for the two books I am currently writing about, Luli and the Language of Tea by Marie Aang and illustrated by Hyewon Yum, and The Pet Potato by Josh Lacey and […]

You’ll probably never look at a bananas the same way

Banana Dream by Hasan Namir

May 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What would you do if you name was Mooz? Well, you might do the same thing as the young boy in Banana Dream. You see, his name is a bit unusual and is associated with bananas. And of course, he is teased by his classmates, and envious of his cousins with more traditional names. But when he learns about the meaning of why his parents named him that, which was when his parents were trying to conceive, and having a difficult time, his mother dreamt […]

When everyone is welcome

Everyone Is Welcome by Phuong Truong

May 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While reading Everyone Is Welcome, I stopped to think about the subject of the book. While it takes a minute or two to get to the big event, there are smaller events that hit on the racism and acts of violence against Asian people. The main event is a friend of the narrator’s grandmother was pushed into the road in front of the Asian market. Now, the friend and grandmother are afraid to go to market by themselves. Then, the narrator is unable to play […]

So, you’re Brad Pitt? That don’t impress me much, but this book did

Death & Sparkles book one by Rob Justus

May 8, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Sparkles is being a real pain in the butt, if Death sneezes, Sparkles farts. Yes, there is little kid humor (and this kid found it amusing) in Death & Sparkles book one. Yet, there is a lot going on that is serious in the middle of all of this humor. The idea of fame and true friendship is the focus, while we have evil managers (Colonel Parker had nothing on Sparkles manager!) and cupcakes. Lots of cupcakes. While some sensitive readers/listeners might not be […]

Are the Good Eats Really Worth Attempting?

Good Eats 4: The Final Years by Alton Brown

May 7, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Alton Brown’s last cookbook really is basically his show Good Eats in written form, down to the use of footnotes. Good Eats 4: The Final Years is basically the recipe (both actual how to make and creation history) catalog from Good Eats: Reloaded and Good Eats: The Return (including the “lost” planned but never made season 3 of The Return). For most all recipes there’s a lot of segmented information to work through including the narrative of the episode and some thoughts thereon, the history […]
