Read them books!

Tzimmes for Tzipporah by Megan Hoyt

Just One Little Light by Kat Yeh

June 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It’s time for another picture book round up review. This time there are two books I enjoyed reading, but did not feel I could honestly do a full review of. Both stories are sweet, but are not necessarily for everyone.  Are you looking for a new book about getting out and about on the farm? Well Tzimmes for Tzipporah is a new book (or will be in September 2023) dealing with a farm during harvest time. It is written by Megan Hoyt and Christine Battuz […]

Quotable Tomato History

Ten Tomatoes that Changed the World by William Alexander

June 7, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader 2 Comments

Ten Tomatoes that Changed the World is presented as both history and investigation, and it’s got a lot of both. It’s pretty readable for non-fiction based in science, but the biggest thing it’s got going for it is a lot of interesting facts that don’t necessarily always go together. There’s some tension in the narration and story-telling, and the factual reporting, but overall it’s a pretty decent read. No wonder I have to give it back to the library without a renewal (someone’s already put […]

Girls just want to have graphic hyperbole

Girl Juice by Benji Nate

June 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Benji Nate is one screwed up person and you will love or hate their work. Sometimes at the same time, like Girl Juice was for me.  This graphic novel is broken down into two main sections. The first follows four roommates that might not really like each other, but they do seem to love each other and have each other’s backs. Unless there is a cute boy, or work, or you know, they have something better to do. We mostly focus on Bunny (the self-proclaimed […]

Plant-Powered Protein by Nava Atlas

May 28, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m getting a little tired of the plant based meat substitute trends in cookbooks, which seems to still be going strong. Still, I picked up Plant-Powered Protein out of curiosity, and it’s actually got some interesting things in it. Two of the best parts is the review in an appendix of the nutritional properties of many plant-based meats that are becoming increasingly commercially common. It’s not a full nutrition label for everything, but it is a list of the major brands ,what they tend to […]

Don’t judge a book by its cover or an ogre by the crusty toenails

Princess Pru and the Ogre on the Hill by Maureen Fergus

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Princess Pru and the Ogre on the Hill was not, my favorite book I read during a picture book marathon. However, it was a book that I enjoyed because it took a familiar theme of, “Don’t judge a book by its cover or an ogre by the crusty toenails” and switched it up a bit. Maureen Fergus’s story is simple, Princess Pru has a great life. She has two overprotective dads, three tarantulas and an ostrich named Orville. But when the ogre moves in next door, […]

A cone is a dogs best friend

Cone Dog by Sarah Howden

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes a book holds its own even as a sequel/companion to another. However, I am not sure if Cone Dog is doing that. The companion of Sarah Howden’s Cone Cat, there are probably similarities, but since one is a dog, and the other a cat, there will be differences. Not to mention because of that, there will be “one is preferred over the other” campaigns. Carmen Mok’s illustrations are probably more amusing than the story for me, as they are cute and cartoon-like, without being […]
