When Rabbit Was a Lion is a story about a child, Rabbit, who is not a fan of parties, noise and too much excitement. But he likes his friends, and wants to celebrate with them. Say, you’re not around from around here are you?

How to Welcome an Alien by Rebecca Klempner

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is a picture book that is about welcoming people in the tradition of Jewish hospitality. How to Welcome an Alien is on the surface, just about being kind to your neighbors and visitors; but the deeper meaning is accepting people who are different from you, and helping them in times of need. This can mean not just your new neighbors, but refugees, aliens or even something else. Rebecca Klempner set their book in a way all can relate. It is humorous, but serious as well. […]

Around the world in a book

Lunar New Year (Celebrations & Festivals) by Natasha Yim

Martina Has Too Many Tias by Emma Otheguy

The Masjid Kamal Loves by Ashley Franklin

Lali’s Flip-Flops by Farhana Zia

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was in the mood for picture books, and when I went looking for one, I found four. (I was surprised I only found four). And when I started to really look at them, I realized they were all culturally based.  And due to the shorter nature of them, it would be hard to write individual reviews, so here is a “Around the World ” in four books themed review. All are currently available and all are good reads and I will probably read the […]

The next car I name is going to be Priscilla Queen of the Desert

A Letter for Bob by Kim Rogers

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Bodies, Bodies: The car has bodies in it & the cars body holds them. Growing up my parents probably named more than a vehicle or two. We never had anything as solid as Bob (named by our young narrator) but I remember a few such as The Banana Boat (it was a 1972 light yellow Dodge Monaco) and The Roadrunner (it had roadrunner mud flaps), but we knew a good vehicle needed the love that the family shows their car in the picture book […]

Hungry?

100 Chapatis by Derek Mascarenhas

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Edibles: While not just another “food book” this book is about how food connects family When I first looked at 100 Chapatis I figured it was another food book. And it is; and it isn’t. What it is about is the love a grandparent/grandfather and grandchild/grandson have together. It is about their culture. It is about their food. It is about remembering the grandmother. And it is about having patience when your new sibling is on the way. It also is about the worries […]

The Amaryllis Family (amaryllidaceae): they can make the mightiest warriors weep and drive vampires away.

Veg-table by Nik Sharma

June 27, 2023 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Nik Sharma is an auto-buy author for me. I think he is one of the most interesting people writing about food today.  Veg-table is more contained, and a little less daunting than The Flavor Bible, but it isn’t less exciting. If you are new to Nik Sharma, this is a great place to start. To clarify, Veg-table: Recipes, Techniques and Plant Science for Big-Flavored, Vegetable-Focused Meals is not a vegetarian or vegan cookbook. Some of the recipes do have meat and dairy, and some do not. Vegetables […]
