I needed a catchy title and all I could come up with is: The words FIASCO and LAST tell you pretty much everything

The Last Delivery by Evan Dahm

July 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo Fiasco Read it, you’ll see what I mean! (SPOILER the mean fact I am saying it works for Fiasco tells you A LOT) I have read some out there things. Some really out there things. Some warped things. And some really warped things. But I think that The Last Delivery by Evan Dahm might almost win top prize for one of the most biz-aaaaaaaaaaaaar books!  I am giving this a three because someone probably will like it. I am giving it a three as there […]

Wacky Witches and Their Peculiar Familiars by April Suddendorf

July 8, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo Celestial  When I hear the word celestial I don’t think of Space or Stars, I think more spiritual, lofty, and Sun. The spiritual does lead to some religious aspects, but also more magical things. Like earth, and mother, and witches. The female theme comes together in a book for young readers/listeners. And while I think of myself as a feminist, I think we can “overdo” that sentiment. This  time, we are not getting it pushed too “hard” but it is not lacking. It does […]

The lengths two girls will take to go to school

Yenebi's Drive to School by Sendy Santamaria

July 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yenebi’s Drive to School by Sendy Santamaria is about Yenebi, her sister Melanie, and mom drive to school every morning across the US-Mexico border. The end. Except it isn’t. You would not think that a trip to school would be as full as it is for Yenebi, but it is. It is wildly adventurous.  Waking at four in the morning to get ready for the drive. Beating on if it will take two or three hours to get there. Wait? Two to three HOURS? You […]

Food is home

Home in a Lunchbox by Cherry Mo

June 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Home in a Lunchbox is one of those picture books that is both sweet, silly, and heartwarming, with a little sadness. Or at least, at first. Cherry Mo’s young narrator  has moved from Hong Kong to America. She only knows a few words of English (hello, thank you, I don’t know, and the important one, toilet), makes mistakes, does not fit in in class and feels hopeless. That is until she opens her lunchbox and familiar sights and smells come out. She will soon learn, […]

June is Pride Month but these work any month!

Linus by Stuart Hausmann

Plátanos Are Love by Alyssa Reynoso-Morris

June 28, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

June is Pride Month. I have been trying to catch up on some older titles, but there are a lot of new ones, too, so I just never seem to be able to. However, the other day I found two older ones called Linus written and illustrated by Stuart Hausmann and Plátanos Are Love by Alyssa Reynoso-Morris with illustrations by Mariyah Rahman. I was able to locate online reader copies, but both titles are currently out.  It was easy to see by page one how […]

Next stop: Healing

Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong

June 25, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I assumed Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong would be a funny a minute laugh out loud read/book. Now, while it has funny moments, it is actually a serious story about loss, love, friendship, family dynamics and coming of age. Therefore, you really can’t always judge a book by its cover.  The realistic, serious moments are relatable, thoughtful and even a bit educational. The humor is a nice balance to counter that. Then there is a bit of a supernatural element that you […]
