Two Souths Don’t Come Together Here

My Two Souths by Asha Gomez

August 11, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 9: Fiasco My Two Souths is not a bad cookbook; however, it seems to present itself as a hybrid between the American South (Atlanta GA) and the Kerala region of India (southern costal area). For me, as a fusion cuisine book, this one is a fail. Adding turmeric and garam masala to turkey pot pie is not really new or interesting, and I have no idea why it’s especially Southern (in either sense). Adding black pepper to dessert, likewise, how is this Southern? Rhubarb […]

My Perfect Afternoon Snacking Cake is Perfect

100 Afternoon Sweets by Sarah Kieffer

August 6, 2024 by Emmalita 5 Comments

It took me a little while to embrace this cookbook. After trying several of the recipes, I now completely endorse it. Part of my struggle is that, to me, cookies are the perfect afternoon sweet, and Sarah Kieffer opted not to include cookies in this book (if you don’t already have her 100 Cookies cookbook you really should). The very first recipe I tried in 100 Afternoon Sweets was disappointing. It was the Jam-Filled Donut Cake. The first bite was good, but it got old fast. […]

DIY Bubbles

Bubble Tea: 50 fun recipes for boba and beyond by Livia Abraham

August 4, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 7: Bananas Bananas are among other things kind of whimsical, definitely sweet, and have a tendency to overshadow anything they are put with. These are qualities also shared by bubble tea, and so for this square I have Bubble Tea: 50 fun recipes for boba and beyond. I don’t know why there hasn’t been a Despicable Me scene with the Minions getting bubble tea; I can totally picture that. Bananas are also associated (at least in my mind, along with apples) school lunches (and […]

Life in Ruins

Ruins by Peter Kuper

August 2, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ruins by Peter Kuper is the kind of book that can’t really be rated. There are parts that were a five, parts that were a one, and parts a nice solid three. And even each page really could be given its own rating. The main part that I based my score on is the cleverness of the story. We follow a monarch butterfly as its journey parallels the human couple for their year in Mexico. Some things are left up to the imagination in places […]

Cooking and a Big Mix-Up

Summer Vamp (A Graphic Novel) by Violet Chan Karim

August 2, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Summer Vamp (A Graphic Novel) by Violet Chan Karim is a fun book. It is not an OMG BEST EVER book, but fun. I enjoyed reading it. As an adult, I am not the intended reader, but I can see where kids will love the vampire angle and the ideas of “coming of age” in a silly and relatable way. And at the same time it is a “grandparent book” or “This is a nice book with nothing really bad happening so the grandparent will […]

I Heard the Wisdom of Uncle

The Bounty Hunter and the Tea Brewer by Faith Erin Hicks

August 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you like(d) Avatar the Last Airbender the television series (not that “movie we don’t name” or the blue people), you might want their story to continue since there are only so many times you can rewatch the Avatar and his friends save the world. And you can do that with the graphic novels that various authors, illustrators and creators have made. You can pick up where our gang of benders and friends left off. Some will allow you to continue their stories, add that […]
