Is a cookbook that’s more about decoration still a cookbook?

Let's Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook by Claire Belton and Susanne Ng

August 16, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 7 Comments

Bingo Review 18 How To Cookbook review ahead, but really more of a how to decorate book. Full disclosure: I have not actually attempted anything in Let’s Bake! A Pusheen Cookbook. There is a big reason for that which I will get to shortly. First, for those unfamiliar, Pusheen is a cartoon character popular on the internet, but now perhaps best known for cutesey merchandise, like socks, mystery boxes, and calendars, widely available all over. Pusheen herself is a grey tabby cat, and by now […]

The Role of Money in Fairy Tales, but with a sort of Feminist twist

Kakuriyo, vols. 1-2 by Waco Ioca, Midori Yuma, Laruha

August 15, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo Review 16: Money! Basically, this is a fairy tale about an impossible debt, and how to pay it without having to get married to some random rich or important guy. Here’s the set up: Aoi Tsubaki is a Japanese college student who has recently lost the grandfather who raised her. The key thing they shared was an ability to see and interact with the spirit world. One day, Aoi stops to help a hungry ayakashi (catch-all term for folkloric monster-creature) and he drags her […]

A Nicely Done Mediterranean Cookbook

Mediterranean Every Day by Sheela Prakash

August 14, 2020 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Sheela Prakash’s Mediterranean Every Day is a well done cookbook with intriguing recipes, pretty pictures, and a reasonable pantry list. I don’t know if it’s a classic yet, but I would recommend it for the moderately adept home cook. I received an advance reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I am predisposed to like this cookbook, because I am comfortable with Mediterranean cuisine. I was able to cook three dishes without going to the store because I had the ingredients on […]

Eating Animals

If nothing is sacred, there is nothing to save.

Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer

August 12, 2020 by LadyStardust 1 Comment

I don’t know that I can offer a traditional (or unbiased) review of this book, because it has become deeply personal for me, but I’ll try. I officially stopped “eating animals” because of Eating Animals. This is the only book I frequently re-read, because it means so much to me, and is a bolstering reminder of why I choose to live the way I do. It’s been a transformative and eye-opening book for me, and I highly recommend it for anyone who’s ever felt uneasy […]

Put ’em up! I fight ya with one paw behind my back!

Tiger vs. Nightmare  by Emily Tetri

August 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Awhile ago, Tiger vs. Nightmare was on several reading and award lists. I was interested, but even though it looked short, I just never found the right moment to start reading. However, a few weeks ago, while I was browsing the website of my local library, I found that they had a copy of Emily Tetri’s book. I requested some curbside pickup service (along with other books) and find myself reading the other night. What I found was a single themed story about what a nightmare […]

“Shame is a cruel thing. It should rest on the perpetrators …. But they don’t carry it the way victims do.“

They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Justin Eisenger, Steven Scott, Harmony Becker

August 3, 2020 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr12bingo Shelfie This graphic novel geared toward young readers is an eye opening first hand account of the Takei family’s experience in the US’s Japanese internment camps during WWII. World renowned actor George Takei relates his childhood memories of being uprooted and shipped across the country with his family and reveals his subsequent struggle to come to terms with the injustice and trauma of those years. Even though many of us may have heard about the camps before (thanks in part to the hard work […]
