Aww Shucks

Shucked by Erin Byers Murray

December 14, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

This is probably the sort of book I’d have appreciated more sitting by the ocean, laying in the sun without much to do, just before a seafood cookout to appreciate the setting.  It was good enough, but I hate to say that I’m not sure what about the author’s experience here necessitated a book. She spends two summers (I think? Maybe more) on an oyster farm that ships to restaurant luminaries like Thomas Keller (and foodie that I am, her dinner at Alinea might have […]

Not as good as I hoped

To Drink and to Eat, Volume 2 by Guillaume Long

December 4, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

When I request a book from NetGalley, I have high hopes that I will enjoy it. I have loved graphic novels that are cookbooks or food centric memoirs. I think communicating about food lends itself to illustration. Cartoonist Guillaume Long writes a culinary comic for Le Monde, “To Drink and To Eat.” While I wasn’t familiar with him, he is apparently well loved. Unfortunately, Long got on the wrong foot with me by writing a jokey little story with recipe about Paul Gauguin moving to […]

Normal Animated Food Stories

What Did You Eat yesterday? vol. 13 by Fumi Yoshinaga

November 30, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I find things like Yakitate!! Japan (I’ve only read the manga) and Food Wars! (both the manga and anime) entertaining up to a point, but the over-exaggerated reactions to tasting various foods gets old after a while. If you like graphic novels and food, but want something a little more down-to-earth, then you should check out What Did You Eat Yesterday? It’s a pretty niche series, in that it follows Kenji and Shiro, a gay couple in current day Japan, through their daily lives, but […]

History of several kinds

The Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty

November 30, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I have to admit up front that I did not completely finish The Cooking Gene; I had it from the library and ran out of renewals before I had to return it. This is not a fast read if you want to really get the content and the feeling. I don’t mean that the style is hard to read; on the contrary, it’s written in a pretty conversational way. What made it slower for me was the depth of what was being presented. This came […]

Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking by Anya von Bremzen

October 31, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I feel bad about only giving this one three stars, but I think it accurately reflects my reading experience. I had to read this by e-book, and that just isn’t a format that works perfectly for me, except for when I’m reading romance or fanfic. I had a hard time focusing on it. When I was able to focus, it was clear that von Bremzen was a good writer, with things to say. She writes about food, and her experiences around, so very well. This […]

Pride and Prejudice Meets Bollywood

Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev

October 30, 2020 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

BINGO RED Let me start by saying that I love Jane Austen novels, and I especially love Pride and Prejudice. I love that book so much that I will read any remix of the novel, and I have read several. This has to be by far my favorite to date. First of all, I think I may have found a Mr. Darcy who is better than, or at least as good as, Colin Firth. And I don’t say that lightly because any P&P fan knows […]
