Another cookbook that may or may not be worth my time

Cornucopia The Green Cookbook by Tony Keogh, Aoife Carrigy, et al.

March 22, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I am still working my way through that stack of lost and found Christmas gift cookbooks; here’s the next one: Cornucopia: The Green Cookbook. I have to admit that I didn’t have high hopes for this one because of all the restaurant cookbooks I’ve seen, I’ve only really liked one well enough to actually use it for more than one or two recipes. The restaurant in this case is a vegetarian joint in Dublin Ireland called Cornucopia that’s been around since the mid 80s. As […]

I miss traveling and am daydreaming through food.

The Irish Pub Cookbook by Margaret M. Johnson, Leigh Beisch (photographer)

March 20, 2021 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

It had been my intention to review this cookbook on St. Patrick’s Day, but my timings were a bit off. So here we are a few days later, but my positive experience with this book works year-round. I really like The Irish Pub Cookbook because beyond its quality recipes it is a book you can read. Placed throughout are informational sections about a variety of pubs all over Ireland as well as the recipes. It’s a celebration of over 70 pub classics as well as […]

We know where the Dragon’s Maw is, where is Paw?: Part two

Scales & Scoundrels V01: Into The Dragon’s Maw by Sebastian Girner

March 5, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As I have said before, I do not usually reread a book. However, I have had a book in the “give away pile” for longer than I can remember. If I looked at it, I thought, “Did I read that? I had to. It is in the “give away” box. But I do not remember reading it….” Recently I grabbed the book and said, “FINE! We are solving this once and for all! I am reading it!” And I started Scales & Scoundrels V01: Into […]

Second One’s the Charm I guess

Mary Berry Foolproof Cooking by Mary Berry

February 28, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I mentioned in a previous review that my mother uncovered a stack or previously misplaced Christmas presents intended for Christmas 2018 and/or 2019. This stack comprised of about 5-6 cookbooks. Here now are my thoughts on the second book in the pile, Mary Berry: Foolproof Cooking. Going by the price sticker, this appears to have been on a clearance shelf like book 1 that I didn’t love, but this one deserves that a bit less. Basically, I might actually try some of these recipes. The […]

Mary Berry Food May Not Be For Me

Mary Berry Everyday by Mary Berry

February 14, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

So fair warning, this is a cookbook review but I have little intention of trying many of the recipes. As I was posting my notes on Goodreads, I glanced at the top review listed, and the reviewer made a point I absolutely agree with; to paraphrase, the title Mary Berry Everyday was slightly misleading in that quite a few of the recipes aren’t exactly everyday by a lot of contemporary standards, at least as defined by me. I’ve tried a lot of Mary Berry baking […]

A pinch of this and a pinch of that and a whole lotta potatos!

Chef Yasmina and the Potato Panic by Wauter Mannaert

February 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Chef Yasmina and the Potato Panic by Wauter Mannaert had a lot of potential. It started with the cover (I know do not judge a book by its cover, but I was hoping this would be a fun romp about cooking, friendship and for some odd reason, a mystery). However, I never completely found it in the actual story. I was weary at first as they first few pages had no text. Which is okay for some things, like a picture book. But when you have […]
