More H-Mart, Less Crying

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

July 24, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 6: Libations I’m reasonably sure I heard about Crying in H-Mart during an NPR interview with the author. It sounded pretty interesting and food-focused. Then after picking it up, with the red cover with a picture of noodles between chopsticks, I read the first essay, and then actually went to the nearest H-Mart (about an hour away as it turned out). The author’s H-Mart is quite different. I’m not complaining about that, but it does get to the incredibly personal nature of the book; […]

When life gives you avocados, make guacamole.

Guacamole: Un poema para cocinar / A Cooking Poem by Jorge Argueta

July 20, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

cbr13bingo Libations (a giant avocado on the cover with the dish of guacamole as well)   Guacamole: Un poema para cocinar / A Cooking Poem  is a delightful book length poem and a tribute to the avocado and the guacamole the young narrator loves to make. It is funny, sweet, and informative. The version of Jorge Argueta’s picture book I read was bilingual, therefore, allowing you to read in both English and Spanish. (Or as I did, try and figure out what words were which as […]

Abracadabra and Up Up and Away to adventure!

Cat & Cat V01 Adventures The Quest for Snacks by Susie Yi

July 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo Travel (they travel to a magical world and I’d like to see a mermaid-cat, a fairy bunny and a lava dog!) “Dear Representative of this particular company. Would you be so kind as to send me these three reader copies of these books? Of course, if you cannot I would prefer book X as my first choice.” Or something like that was the email I sent to a rep of a publisher. I had asked for three books. And Cat & Cat V01 Adventures […]

I have never loved garlic so much in my life!!!!!

Garlic and the Vampire by Bree Paulsen

July 16, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo The Wilds  This is one of the DARNDEST CUTEST BOOKS I HAVE READ THIS YEAR. I picked Garlic and the Vampire up July 13, 2021 and would have read the entire thing right then and there if I had not been at work.  I had read a bit about it and thought it sounded cute but was hoping it would live up to the hype of the pre-publication reviews, the promotions, and the fact it just sounded so darn good (after all, hype something […]

Food and socially conscious history together; I wish I would have liked it more.

The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South by Michael W. Twitty

July 7, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 11/30 I’m feeling like a dick on this one, but I didn’t have the reading experience I was hoping for with such glowing reviews. I didn’t hate it, or even dislike it, but I didn’t really like it all that much either. I had two main problems here. The first may or may not have been exacerbated by the second, but as of right now, I have no way of knowing. Before I get to my issues, this book […]

“The privilege of living now is that I can seat myself at the master’s table – the table of my white ancestor, a slaveholder – and interpret his world, and he has no say.”

The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South by Michael Twitty

I think to understand what The Cooking Gene is, you have to have a picture of its author. I’ve known Michael Twitty on Twitter for about a decade, Museum Twitter can be a small space sometimes in the best possible ways. Besides being a hoot to spend time with during political debates, Twitty is also a Culinary Historian focusing on the foodways of Africa, enslaved African Americans, African America and the African and Jewish diasporas. Basically, he’s one of the people you want to talk […]
