If Paul Bunyan was a brave Chinese woman having her story told by a sassy, brave young Chinese girl

The Legend of Auntie Po by Shing Yin Khor

August 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This book, The Legend of Auntie Po, had an interesting journey to my hand. I was interested in reading, but never got around to it. One day it was on the returns cart next to my desk (Ah! MY desk! I promise you that year with the other desk meant nothing to me). I picked it up, browsed it, and decided, yes, I will read it. A coworker saw I had it and said how much she loved the book. After I finished, we talked […]

This will be one of my CBR13 favorites

Finding Freedom: A Cook’s Story; Remaking a Life From Scratch by Erin French

August 21, 2021 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr13bingo Flora I would guess that fewer than 5% of the book reviews I’ve done over the years have been non-fiction, and I can only think of one that had anything to do with cooking, so reading a memoir about a chef (even though she calls herself a cook, not a chef) would seem way outside my area of interest. And yet, this memoir is probably going to be one of my CBR13 favorites. It is an incredible story of resilience in the face of […]

Watch out for angry mothers and murderous cults

Queen’s Favorite Witch V01 The Wheel of Fortune by Benjamin Dickson

August 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If Kiki the Witch and Harry Potter combined, you’d probably get the graphic novel, Queen’s Favorite Witch V01 The Wheel of Fortune.  It has an old school feeling, but also modern sensibilities. There is obviously a European flare to the tone (as it is set in Elizabethan era) but accessible for all readers.  It is not for those who are more sensitive, as there is an evil cult, a possible assassination attempt, death, and bullies. However, it is also seriously sweet and funny. Talking rats, […]

Lailah’s Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story by Reem Faruqi

August 18, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lailah is in a new school in a new country. She misses her old friends, friends who were old enough last year to partake in the fasting of Ramadan. This year, she is deemed old enough by her mother, and wishes she could share her concerns and excitement with those friends. But here at the new school, she is shy and worried no one will understand the importance of this honor. She worries that people will make fun of her and feel sorry when she […]

Boo Stew by Donna L. Washington

August 18, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Boo Stew is probably not a dish you wish served cold, hot or at all! Curly Locks might have a good heart, and a passion for cooking, but her ingredients are a bit, unique, to say the least. The townsfolk of Toadsuck Swamp know that you do not even have a nibble of a creation by Curly Locks. Yet, one day one of her dishes go missing from her windowsill, and town is being bulled by Scares (who Curly Locks has never paid too much […]
