“Get that parasol out of your mouth, dear, you’re going to need it…”

December 5, 2016 by Caitycat 3 Comments

Jenny Lawson, our beloved Bloggess, mentioned this book. It sounded really awesome, so I had to check it out. It’s a look at what life was like for a woman back in Victorian times. It has quotes from medical journals and books of the time, as well as illustrations, all with hilarious commentary. Basically, it was a dirty, dirty time, and having a uterus made you crazy sick, or just crazy, unless you filled it with your husband’s babies. There are chapters on grooming, diet, […]

He really is, though…

December 5, 2016 by NTE 2 Comments

Warning – this post is political in nature, and a little bit of my … ahem… anger? Disappointment? Total confusion about the state of our country?… leaked through, which is to be expected, I think, given the nature of the book, and of our country right now.  If you’re not ready to read stuff about people being disappointed about how things could have gone, or if you’re on Team Trump, I just want to give you a heads up: this is not for you, and […]

“It’s hard out there for a fuzzy little introvert.”

December 5, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I’m a fan of Amy Schumer, mostly based off the first season of her show and her real-life antics. She seems like she’d be a lot of fun, and she’s not afraid to share her opinions, which I love. I’m surprised by how much I liked this book, though. I thought it would be mostly dick jokes, and while they do appear in abundance, I found the more serious chapters to be much more effective than when she’s aiming for comedy. “I know my worth. I embrace […]

“I lost a Tony award to Broadway legend Audra McDonald when I was twelve so I’ve been a bitter bitch since before my first period.”

Anna Kendrick is one of those people who I probably like more for their real world personality (Instagram and Twitter) than her body of work. I enjoyed the first Pitch Perfect but was disappointed by the sequel and my husband will never forgive me for dragging him to see Into the Woods. I’ve only soberly seen the first Twilight (although I believe I’ve been in a room showing the next two in the series) but I remember being pleasantly surprised by her performance in Up in the Air since she was […]

Child Power!

December 4, 2016 by ChainedVase Leave a Comment

Jacob Two-Two is the youngest child in his family. He has two older brothers and two older sisters. He is two plus two plus two years old. Unlike his older siblings, there are many things that Jacob can not do, like ride a two wheel bike, run errands for his parents, or cross the street alone. Because he was the smallest and youngest in his large and boisterous family, Jacob developed the habit of saying everything two times, since no one ever listened the first […]

Being seen, being acknowledged: Worth its weight in gold.

December 2, 2016 by NTE 1 Comment

Everybody’s experiences are different, right? Nobody had the same exact high school experience as anybody else; nobody’s Christmases, or prison terms, or piano recitals are exactly alike; And nobody’s experience of parenting is exactly 100% the same as any others. But the thing about writing is that it takes all the things that are unique and singular, and somehow makes them feel universal.  There’s something about mothering, about parenting, something about loving a child so much to the exclusion of all else that, even though […]
