“Of all the things I am not very good at, living in the real world is perhaps the most outstanding.”

I have 9 reviews that I need to post, so forgive me if some of them are on the briefer side! This Bill Bryson book is a collection of newspaper articles that spanned several years in the nineties. Basically, Bryson went to go live in England for 20 years and when he came back he was slightly startled to see changes — not only how much America was different from England, but also how it had changed in the years that he’d been gone. So […]

Moments of Zen

This oral history of the Jon Stewart years of The Daily Show is a mostly-entertaining look behind the scenes of the influential show. It is also a backdoor history of the last 17 or so years. Seriously, if you’re too young to really remember the Bush v. Gore election or the invasion of Iraq, you could learn a bit from reading this book. As an oral history, one of the more impressive attributes of the book is the many luminaries they got to speak. Senator […]

Be careful what you wish for…

February 19, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Ah, the glory of the library basement book sale, where books are $0.50, or even free!  Thanks to the generosity of people donating books during the holiday season, my local library was practically begging people to take their donated and overstock books to give them forever homes.  I am a little sad to learn that this one was my library’s only copy, but since it hadn’t been checked out in so long it got booted to the sale bin.  I had a few free hours […]

Archie cover

Wherein they ditch the jalopy and I’m okay with it

February 18, 2017 by J 2 Comments

As a kid, I was as likely to beg my mom to buy me an Archie Comic as a candy bar in the checkout line. She would buy them even when I didn’t ask and then I’d have to wait for her to finish to wrest each new double digest from her. More than once, I contemplated sending away for the fan club advertised in the back pages. I loved the whole crew. Archie. Betty. Midge and Moose. Rare appearances by Valerie! I loved the […]

Rue-ing a mid-series disappointment

February 18, 2017 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have a small confession to make: I bought this book right away when it came out, and then I couldn’t bear to open it because I knew it would be at least 2 years before the next one. Well, said next one has been announced, so I felt a little more secure opening Imprudence. I have really liked everything Gail Carriger has written thus far that I have read, but this was a bit of a let-down. I feel like I may have let […]

Rest Well, And Dream of Large Women

February 17, 2017 by Emperor Cupcake Leave a Comment

In case you haven’t encountered her on the internet, Lindy West is a writer and comedian who battles trolls–the kind that dwell on Twitter instead of beneath bridges. She’s also an audaciously loud, unapologetically fat woman in a world that prefers its women to be quiet and thin. I identified with a lot of what West wrote about in Shrill. Her lifelong struggle with body image issues, her journey to find her voice as a writer, and–most recently–her incredible screw-up of a freelance project. Today, […]
