Jen Lancaster was the author that really got me into the memoir genre; she was loud, liked animals and felt comfortable sharing most of her somewhat ridiculous life with her audience. In recent years she has delved into fiction which I tried but haven’t enjoyed. Jen knew her core audience, including many of the women buying her fiction, wanted more memoirs from her and she wrote this book for them. But then her publisher didn’t want to publish “vintage Jen Lancaster” so she opted to […]
I wonder if this author would call me a snowflake?
When I was about halfway through Christopher Moore’s A Dirty Job I had to go on Amazon to check the other reviews to see if anyone else was bothered by what I was, i.e. the rampant casual racism/sexism. Out of the eleven one-star reviews and however-many two-star ones, I only saw one that mentioned my concerns, so maybe I’m blowing that aspect out of proportion. In fact, I think he may even have written a sequel. But in his attempts to include “jokes” and “quirky […]
It makes sense in the book, I swear (ft. Greg Davies)
A classic in fantasy. You’ve probably already read this, right? If not, lucky you! You get to read it now. Like right now. Stop reading this and go find the book! Still here? Eh, I tried. If you’d like to know the book takes place in a universe where the world is a flat disc and balancing on the back of four elephants who in turn rest on the back of A’Tuin, the giant turtle. This is where Rincewood lives. In a chaotic, warm and […]
Hi. I’m Badkittyuno, and I’ve fallen behind again…
Hi. Sorry. I really thought I was like 10 reviews behind and it turned out to actually be 19. So then I started up this list of reviews…and didn’t post it…and now I’m 26 behind. I would blame my kids/divorce/life, but really — I’d much rather read than write! Also, I’ve been working from home a lot and doing laundry instead of writing reviews (which is what I do when I get bored at the office), so that’s not helping. Anyway, here’s 26 brief reviews […]
Adorable and Full of Meaning
When crystalclear reviewed Lobster is the Best Medicine, she suggested passing along this book about friendship to your friends. I am lucky enough to call her friend – and I am the same friend who moved recently and had the naked refrigerator in need of fun Liz Climo magnets – so when she was over my house the other night she handed me this book and I immediately blew through it. Reviewing this one is a bit tough, as it is very straightforward in its […]
Werewolves in New York? It’s more likely than you think!
A Canadian mystery writer lives in New York city and gets involved in some supernatural/criminal hijinx. Also, he’s a werewolf (which is kind of obvious right from the cover, so, like, not a spoiler). This book started life as a stand-alone short story called “This Time Around”. I read that and totally loved it. The author has a nice touch and a good sense of humor so I was interested to see how the whole story played out. The short story serves as the start […]
