“You haven’t really been anywhere until you’ve got back home.” Step right up, step right up. It’s the sequel to the color of magic. It’s the light fantastic! It’s got your terrible puns: “Rincewind, all the shops have been smashed open, there was a whole bunch of people across the street helping themselves to musical instruments, can you believe that?” “Yeah,” said Rincewind. “Luters, I expect.” It’s got your on the nose social commentary Not for the first time she reflected that there were many […]
Everything in Australia wants to kill me, but I’m dying to visit anyway
This was a fun read. Bill Bryson is always fun, and this was one of the best memoirs I’ve read by him yet. Basically, it’s just Bryson in Australia in 2001. He does a lot of drinking, a lot of exploring, and a lot of trying not to get killed by the locals (animals, people, plants, whatever). It’s witty and silly and his traveling companion for the last few weeks cracked me up. Bryson has a Dave Barry-like way of describing things (or maybe Dave […]
Okay, so I HAVE to read Pride and Prejudice now, right?
Oh my god, y’all, this book was so fun. As I’ve admitted in shame before, I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice before (I know, I know). But I grabbed this one on audiobook after approximately one million of you reviewed it favorably, and I really enjoyed it! The audio version in particular was a fun distraction while training for my latest run. So this tells the modern day story of 5 unmarried sisters, and their various shenanigans as their parents’ financial situation falls to pieces. It’s […]
Dildo cannons and silicone butts
What The Hell Did I Just Read: A Novel of Cosmic Horror is the third in David Wong’s trilogy following the exploits of David Wong, his girlfriend Amy and his sidekick John—the first book was John Dies At The End and the second This Book Is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don’t Touch It. David Wong is the head editor of Cracked.com, the comedy website, and the comedic voice that made Cracked such a success is the foundation to all three books. I would describe […]
I’ve discovered Prime Reading
I am not a big e-reader. I like books. I want to turn pages and feel the weight of a new story in my hands. However, Amazon offers Prime Reading which is a selection of Kindle books for free and I couldn’t not try it! I downloaded the app for my phone but didn’t want to commit to a full length book on a 6 1/2 in screen so I started with some quick reads. Fred Stoller is the perennial “that guy” from TV but […]
Playing catch up (plus I want to complain about All the Missing Girls)
The Maid’s Version by Daniel Woodrell (3 stars) This is a very well-written but ultimately not very good story. By that, I mean that Woodrell’s writing is gorgeous — his descriptions of small town Missouri, his flashbacks to the 1920s — but the central mystery (who caused an explosion at a dance hall in 1929) doesn’t do much to grip the reader. I picked this up solely because I loved Winter’s Bone, but it definitely did not live up to my expectations. Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin […]
