“Buffering is that time you spend waiting for the pixels of your life to crystallize into a clearer picture”

January 16, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“Buffering is that time you spend waiting for the pixels of your life to crystallize into a clearer picture; it’s a time of reflection, a time of pause, a time for regaining your composure or readjusting your course. We all have a limited amount of mental and emotional bandwidth, and some of life’s episodes take a long time to fully load.” I don’t YouTube. I haven’t spent much time on the various channels put together by “Content Creators” like Hannah Hart but I do respect […]

A Comic’s Guide to Mastectomies

January 12, 2018 by LanierHgts 1 Comment

This is the book that I wish I had written. In fact, many of my friends and family did tell me that I should write it, but I was too slow, and Caitlin Brodnick did an amazing job of it instead. Ms. Brodnick learned at age 21 that she was BRCA positive. At age 28 she opted for prophylactic bilateral mastectomies, as a result of her family history. Ms. Brodnick spent some years engaging in self-destructive behavior in a effort to ignore her diagnosis.  She did […]

But why did the font keep changing?

January 11, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

W. Kamau Bell is someone whose name I immediately recognized but I couldn’t place him in a single thing I had actually seen. I didn’t have FX when Totally Biased was on in 2012 and I once again don’t have cable so I haven’t seen (or, honestly, heard of) United Shades of America on CNN but I knew the name so I picked up the book. Awkward Thoughts is a pretty good balance between humor and seriousness. It is mostly a collection of essays that loosely tie together to create a […]

But what if the pony’s trick is really cool?

January 10, 2018 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I’ll pretty much read whatever Chuck Klosterman puts out.  I know what I’m getting, it’s pop culture cake with highbrow frosting, but dammit, who doesn’t like cake? It’s also not as easy to pull off as even Klosterman himself joked in Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs by giving the formula for writing his pieces. Many seemed to take that as a recipe rather than a joke; I’m thinking particularly of cannonball nine book club selection Life Goes Pretty Fast, you can’t just overthink pop culture […]

And so it begins…

January 9, 2018 by alphabootoo 5 Comments

I attempted the second Cannonball and failed miserably (seriously – the ancient blog I managed to cobble together for the effort shows that but a single book review ever got posted). I’m finally back to try again, although I’ve lowered the bar to just a Quarter Cannonball in the hopes it will be more manageable. I am the sort of person who buys books in the hopes that perhaps I will someday find a way to read them and this challenge may be the impetus […]

Terry Pratchett, you say? Good choice for the new year!

January 9, 2018 by Inksplotch 1 Comment

With the way this year started out, I figured some light, heart and wisdom would go a long way. It has taken me this long to go back to Sir Terry Pratchett’s books after his death, but I was feeling melancholy and in need of a lift. Witches Abroad is a fish out of water/fairytale nod that features Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick (who shall always be known as Magrat the wet hen). The titular witches do indeed travel abroad, and I absolutely […]
