A Great Book for a Bad Week

February 11, 2018 by Kitkat Leave a Comment

Last week was terrible for the PTA I run.  The event coordinator for one of our biggest fundraisers of the year quit, and the event coordinator for the annual talent show also quit.  By Friday, I was ready to curl up on the coach with a bottle of rosé and a book, so I drove over to the library and hit the romance section hard.  My first selection — and the novel I’m reviewing here — was called Agnes and the Hitman. This book was […]

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo, by F. C. Yee

Can we talk about California as the Hellmouth?

February 10, 2018 by J 3 Comments

The Epic Crush of Genie Lo is the story of a high school girl who learns that it’s not enough that she has to work her butt off to get into an Ivy and please her traditional Chinese mother. Now it turns out she has to prevent some of the worst demons of Chinese mythology from eating the people of the Bay Area. Can a girl get a break? I can’t remember where I stumbled over the synopsis for Genie Lo, but it has been […]

Another Stephanie Plum book……

February 10, 2018 by KB 1 Comment

What can we say about book 24 in this series that would not have been said about the previous 23 books?? Not much, except that a new love interest has popped up!  With a bit of research, apparently Diesel is in the special edition Stephanie Plum books – the Christmas ones. Personally I did not enjoy these off shoots and only read a couple of them. So the new love interest definitely adds something new to this particular book in the series. Despite this book […]

An Aussie comedy

February 10, 2018 by KB Leave a Comment

When I first began reading this book, I was quite worried about the content. A number of characters were introduced that fulfilled the stereotypes of racist, sexist and even “up to no good old whingers”. So for the first few chapters I was quite iffy about continuing to read the novel, wondering if these characters were appropriate in this day an age where there is a huge focus on these issues – especially in Australia. However after a while I realised the intent of the […]

It’s a Tide ad.

A new year, a new Tingler.  (NSFW OBVS) What in seven hells possessed me to start this tradition?  But in fairness, how could I possibly resist THIS: So our story begins with Greg Henderson speeding down a desert highway, cool wind in his hair, warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air. (I assume this applies to desert highways in Arizona as well as California).  As Greg hustles to get to a big car show, he makes sure to let the reader know that […]

Three Brave and Smart Kids

February 9, 2018 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

In rhyming text, you see thee different second graders and how their curiosity changes the world around them. The reason you know they are in the same class is the hints of the teacher and other markers of the illustrator. The other fun part of each book is you can tell the era by the clothing the adults are wearing. And watch how things crossover in each of the three books. In Rosie, she is shy and does not want to speak out. Why? Because […]
