Amy Dyckman is at it again. She just cannot help herself! Her books are as fun and quirky as her green hair. (And as I might have mentioned in my review of Read the Book, Lemmings she is a very nice person, too). The story of Misunderstood Shark is a shark just wants to show “the people out there” what kind of shark he really is. After all, everyone always seems to misunderstand him. He does not want to eat the fish, but to show […]
A Narwhal and Jelly Book
The Narwhal and Jelly graphic novel series is a “My first graphic novel” read. There is very basic text, almost repetitive and with a rhythm that beginning readers tend to have. Aimed at the first to second grader (ages 6 to 8) you can read them out loud as well. The very basic illustrations do not add a lot of details, but the right amount to not overpower the text, but to compliment it. Narwhal is a bit on the “not the brightest fish in […]
Wedgie & Gizmo at it again
Not realizing that the Wedgie and Gizmo series by Suzanne Selfors was not a stand-alone book, I picked up the second one. However, while you should read the first title first, there is enough background to help fill in some blanks. The story about the family and friendship runs side-by-side with the story of Wedgie and Gizmo as it is told from the point of view of the animal telling the chapter, but also the narrator gives information that neither pet could understand. Wedgie is […]
Lots of mugs, dames, and goons–not so much plot
Christopher Moore loves language. That might be an odd claim to make about an author who popularized the term fuckstockings, but I’ll stand by it. If a guy rewrites Shakespearean plays with pornographic subplots he either has a deep and abiding passion for Elizabethan English or he’s a complete wack job. Now that I think about it, he’s probably both. Regardless, any time you pick up a novel by Moore, you can expect to have fun with words, and Noir is no exception. Noir is set in […]
Read the Book, too!
Learning to read takes on a new twist with Read the Book, Lemmings by Ame Dyckman and Zachariah Ohora. When the lemmings are told to, “Read the book!” to learn how to be lemmings, it does not go as S.S. Cliff, First Mate Foxy planned. In fact, it goes very, very wrong! But when he learns his lemmings are not being stubborn but that they just do not know how to read, Foxy must teach Jumper, Me Too, and Ditto Lemming to read. Which also […]
Monsters Count and Say Their ABCs
It is not often that I say, “This is the best book ever.” And with Monster ABC by Kyle Sullivan and Derek Sullivan this is one of the best Halloween alphabet board books I have read in a while. And Hush Now, Banshee!: A Not-So-Quiet Counting Book also by the Sullivan’s is a close second. They are alphabet and counting books, however, with a more adult tone. The child will enjoy that H is for the Hobgoblin that smells like a fart (and of course, […]
