Phoebe and her Unicorn is at times charming and touching, but mostly it is funny, and overall an entertaining read. What began in 2012 as a daily webcomic (originally titled Heavenly Nostrils) has now been gathered into seven graphic novels, and is still being posted daily by author and artist Dana Simpson. On the strong recommendation of a friend I picked up the first graphic novel, Phoebe and her Unicorn, for my six year old. She loves it, her ten year old sister loves it, and I quite […]
Edie Is Ever So Helpful or Not….
Well intentioned, but not always having her plans work out, is our Edie. She is that modern girl, with a modern take on life. The title Edie is Ever So Helpful is your first clue that Edie probably is not so helpful. And Sophy Henn in text and illustrations, follows our heroine throughout the story showing this in colors as vibrant as Edie herself. Some of the helpful things our Edie does is wake the family up… with a very loud song. She styles her […]
Welp, I was warned.
You know that parable about the scorpion and the turtle? (Note: I almost certainly have the animals wrong, but for reasons that will become obvious, I’m not looking it up). The scorpion asks the turtle to take it across a river, turtle balks, scorpion points out they’ll both drown if he stings the turtle, turtle takes the scorpion halfway across when he gets stung. Turtle’s dying words amount to “WTF, bro?” and the scorpion says “you knew I was a scorpion when you picked me […]
1970’s Feminism
I had not heard of Fear of Flying (1973) by Erica Jong before I saw it on my list of 50 Books Every Woman Should Read Before She Turns 40. I subsequently learned that Jong’s book was controversial for its racy sex; that it involves the sexual escapades of the protagonist in Europe; and it was important in second-wave feminism. Once I began reading, though, it was not what I expected. I found the protagonist grating at times, and the plot felt rambling. But it also grew on […]
Great Autobiography/Manual for Womanhood Mash-Up
So, full disclosure, I already thought Amy Pohler was the coolest before reading this. I have fond memories of the era of SNL when she and Tina Fey were the first women to helm the “Weekend Update” segment. I’ve always liked her willingness to go all in on over-the-top, unsexy characters. Finding out she has had relatable career struggles and has fantastic taste in music was the icing on the cake. I’ve never seen “Parks and Rec” and lost track of her work after SNL. […]
Caution: Fashion may be flammable
Fashion, humor and history? Sign me up! I am a big fan of Jennifer Wright. I follow her on Twitter, she’s amazing, and I really enjoyed It Ended Badly and Get Well Soon which are both snarky looks at history both well and unknown. Killer Fashion follows a similar conceit but it is way too short! Atop their heads ladies would wear ribbons and baubles everywhere. But those ornaments they affixed turned all their heads to candle wicks. I am a big fashion girl. It’s how I make my living, I […]
