The edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Play a Play I read is no longer in print. Hopefully this new edition is just a new cover and has not changed the work of Richard R. George . Roald Dahl introduces the play with a short introduction of how it was sent to him. The end of the play has staging, lighting and other ideas of how you can perform this version yourself. The middle is the play. It follows the movie closely in areas […]
Yes, this memoir is as good as everyone says.
If you like audiobooks at all, I would suggest doing this by audio. I know I enjoyed it a lot more than I would have reading in another format because Trevor Noah narrates it himself, and his voices for everyone are very charming. There’s also something very satisfying about hearing someone tell stories about their life in their own voice. This book is made up of a series of interconnected stories about his youth in South Africa, from when he was “born a crime,” with […]
Classic Pratchett
Wyrd Sisters is pure Terry Pratchett all the way. Classic Pratchett means puns and quirks and oddball images, odder characters and even villains you cannot help but love (sometimes). There are story lines that intermingle and must be paid attention to as they will take you on different paths than expected. I must admit while the Wyrd Sisters themselves have been favorites in other books, in this one they could get a little draining. The lack of intelligence with characters is always an issue with […]
Don’t read this book under any circumstances. Ever!
This book should be called, “Don’t read this book under any circumstances. Ever!” Is there a rating score lower than one? Sadly, Don’t Tell! by Tom Booth has no story, no action and most importantly has a questionable ending: It is okay to tell a secret someone has asked you to keep. While that is not a black and white issue as, yes, bad secretes should be told but those “good secrets” should be kept. But what kind of secret is a good secret […]
Opera happens because a large number of things amazingly fail to go wrong
I love musicals and I like Opera. I love Phantom of the Opera and I love great female characters with ambition. Of course Terry Pratchett’s going to combine all this into one perfect little book. Granny and Nanny are witches in a coven who’ve recently lost their third witch. Unfortunately they discover that you really need the third witch to balance stuff out, so they come up with a plan to recruit Agnes Nitt to be part of their little gang. You needed at least […]
Same old Sedaris, now with added feels
For several years now, I’ve refused to buy hardcover books. I don’t like the added expense, of course, but mostly, I just don’t like the extra bulk and really don’t like how they feel in my hand: too much like textbooks or hymnals. I don’t need to be reminded of either when I’m trying to read something fun. As a result, I’m consistently a year or two behind everyone else with my reading, a (discount) price I’m willing to pay. David Sedaris has long […]
