Checks All the Boxes and Does It Well

July 21, 2018 by ASKReviews 1 Comment

Best for: Anyone who likes fairly humorous personal memoirs, especially of the healthcare variety. Probably not best for those currently pregnant, unless they want to read a bunch of vignettes about the various things that might go wrong during labor and delivery (though to be fair, only one such vignette ends poorly, and that’s near the end of the book). In a nutshell: Former junior doctor Adam Kay unearthed his diaries from the few years he was a doctor working in the NHS. Worth quoting: […]

Mooom! There’s a bear in my bed……

July 18, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Bear in My Bed has some fun illustrations in their childlike manner. They are abstract with whimsical touches. The bears antics are also very “childlike” in the way they are how a child could act during their bedtime routine. The takeaway is either yes, the bear is there or (more likely) the child is telling you about himself and his feelings, actions and overall state of play/mind. Joyce Wan has created a delightful bedtime story that soon your child could read with you as […]

A warm and lovely book that took me by surprise

July 14, 2018 by tillie Leave a Comment

Are you a Grocery Store Expert?

July 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Max Explains Everything: Grocery Store Expert did not really “grab me” with its story or illustrations. However, the twist at the end is a bit amusing. If you the adult reader pay attention you probably could see it coming. The story is simple: family runs out of things. They need milk, cereal, toilet paper. Mom take Max to the store to buy these (and other items). Max, like many kids, is not thrilled with the prospect, but Max, having done this many times before, knows […]
