I saw Santa be a Grumpy Bear?

December 19, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While there are some funny moments in Santa Bruce (one little girls Christmas gift wish is very amusing but makes me a little more a little bit scared! And I am nervous especially of her enthusiasm at the end when she gets something slightly different than what was asked for). But if I was Bruce? I would eat my “family.” If you know the Bruce books by Ryan T. Higgins you know this book. It just has a Christmas theme attached to it. When Bruce […]

Unfortunately timed (although appropriately titled) memoir

December 16, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I listened to the audio version of Unqualified by Anna Faris and the whole time I kept thinking how awkward it must have been for Anna to have this memoir come out about two months after she announced her divorce to Chris Pratt. There is some hasty editing that alludes to the past tense of their relationship but there are a few essays that probably needed a second look; hell she dedicated the book to Pratt alone (when they have a kid together) and while he wrote […]

She’s fought giants, clobbered dragons, now she’s gotta churn that butter?

December 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Monsters Beware! by Rafael Rosado and Jorge Aguirre is the third in the series of Claudette and her friend’s adventures. There is Giants Beware! and Dragons Beware! as well. And while this is a mostly standalone story, find the first two and read them first. Of course, if I had done that I probably would not have read this one. First, let me say the writing is great. There is a lot going on, you are wondering how they will fight the monsters, churn that […]

Books about books, dance, reporters and scuba diving!

December 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Last night, I was looking at the box of (sadly) damaged books at work. I saw four I Can Read books. I have not read one in a while, so I picked them up. They average out to be a 2.5 for the four, but kids will enjoy and will be 5’s down the board. My biggest complaint with easy readers is companies do not have a uniform rating system. Publisher X might have these at a Level 1 but another would have them as […]

I have happy feels

December 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

These three stories have nothing in common other than, they are really sweet stories about special people and special things. Is That You, Eleanor Sue? written and illustrated by Tricia Tusa. Harold Loves His Wolly Hat by Vern Kousky and When I First Met You, Blue Kangaroo! by Emma Chichester Clark give me happy feels. Eleanor Sue is a clever, cut kiddo who loves to pretend and play dress up. She loves her Saturdays, her mother, her grandmother and having fun. Harold loves his woolly […]

The foolish think them wise and the wise think them foolish.

December 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cold Mountain (Graphic Novel): The Legend of Han Shan and Shih Te, the Original Dharma Bums is a graphic novel that uses the poetry of Han Shan and Shih Te to tell the story of these two scoundrels. If they existed, that is. The main part of why these people might not have existed is their names are “Cold Mountain” (Han Shan) and The Foundling (Shih Te). And while it is romantic to think they put their poetry on trees, rocks and caves, more likely […]
