Relatively good

It’s All Relative by A.J. Jacobs

February 3, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

This book and the underlying family reunion that the author is organizing (and structuring the book around) get away from him, but given the scope it’s hard to hold a grudge.  A.J. Jacobs seems to hold the largest family reunion for his global extended relations, in hopes of proving that there is more that unites us than divides us, all while doing a deep dive into his extended family tree, in the breezy creative non-fictional style of his previous books.  I got twisted writing that, […]

Ask A Manager by Alison Green

February 3, 2019 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Man did I miss an opportunity in not posting this review yesterday, because it would’ve been the perfect Groundhog Day book. I love the Ask A Manager blog; it’s the perfect blend of witty and straightforward advice coupled with truth-is-stranger-than-fiction tales of working life.  Alison Green answers questions compassionately and intelligently and always manages to make her obvious-upon-reflection answers kind to the questioners.  I love this blog so much that I’ve gone back through the archives for old posts, it’s helped me shape my interpersonal […]

Idiotizadas: Un cuento de empoderhadas by Raquel Córcoles (Moderna de Pueblo)

February 3, 2019 by pluiedenovembre Leave a Comment

This was a fun, light read that nevertheless deals with important issues related to what being a woman means today and what is expected of us, by our families, society and also what we expect from ourselves and our friends. The author, Raquel Córcoles, is better known as Moderna de pueblo, the character she created based on herself. This particular book, whose title roughly translates as Stupefied: A Fairy Tale of Empowerment, is the story of how Moderna has tried to unlearn all the toxic […]

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty

January 31, 2019 by CosmoNewanda 1 Comment

This book, is a very practical and blunt statement about the part of life people don’t want to think about. People die, and when that happens someone has to take the time and the care to prepare the body. You will learn quickly if this book is for you or if it isn’t. It is gross, and it has a morbid sense of humor that is obviously needed to get through a job where death is in your face every day, sometimes quite literally. Some […]

Days of Our Trying Not to Get Humanity Blown into Smithereens

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

January 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

By the time I was not even halfway through Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente I thought, “This is one screwed up book.” As one reviewer on Amazon put it, “it is a barrage of fluff” (more later). It is all these strung together words just to put words together. They are not run-on sentences but run-off-the-page-turn-left-at-the-corner-and-keep-going-on sentences. The story, once you get into it, is easy enough to understand: a has been singer (as one of my coworkers put it, “a Meatloaf like performer” […]

Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier

January 29, 2019 by CosmoNewanda 1 Comment

I’ve been playing video games as long as I can remember. When I was a child I would walk to the laundry mat/videorama to rent new games. I was lucky to own a couple of titles, but if it wasn’t a birthday or Christmas, I had to use my allowance to rent. The game boxes filled two cases, facing forwards from floor to ceiling. There must have been 50 titles to choose from each promising a new magical adventure. I don’t think I ever gave […]
