Perfectly fine about sums it up, yeah.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

May 5, 2019 by octothorp 1 Comment

I felt the same way about Confederacy of Dunces – I don’t need a likeable main character, and I don’t mind unreliable narrators, but I don’t think awful people with superiority complexes are in and of themselves funny. The humor in this book seems to revolve around Eleanor’s judgemental attitude about everyone around her save herself (I’ll save the spoiler but even at the “big reveal” that wasn’t all that shocking, she doesn’t really reflect on how damaging her attitude is or how her actions […]

Meaty: essays by Samantha Irby

May 3, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

This book is dedicated to the kid Maurice in my US history class my junior year who called me a fucking idiot. lol bruh I was not overly enamored by Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting in Real Life but I was looking for a breezy memoir to listen to following a string of serious books and Meaty was available for immediate download off Overdrive. Plus my sister stans hard for Irby so I felt obligated to give her another shot. I will say I vastly preferred her debut Meaty over […]

Do you believe that Pirates don’t takes baths and there are Groovicorns?

Pirates Don’t Take Baths by John Sega

Do You Believe in Groovicorns? by Rosie Greening

May 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yesterday was a slow day at work. Therefore, I took a few minutes to look at the new crop of Sale Books that came in. (Long story short, they are just lovely normal books looking for a home, but just have a slightly lower price than usual). Two books that caught my attention were two board books. One, Pirates Don’t Take Baths by John Segal and the other, I actively went looking for as I had been the one to do the data entry on […]

Least Favorite Spalding Book

Dry Hard by Nick Spalding

May 3, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well this was a shocker, I didn’t like this one. Usually Nick Spalding can make me laugh until I hurt myself. “Dry Hard” really didn’t work for me though because I think that Spalding left out some things that could have rounded out the book more. We hear about how badly Kate and Scott behave when they drink. And there’s even references to their families realizing it and avoiding them. I think it would have been more realistic to have the parents and siblings back […]

The Berenstain Bears Pirate Adventure by Mike Berenstain

May 2, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Berenstain Bears Pirate Adventure  by Mike Berenstain is a solid example of a Berenstain Bears book. And since it is from 2016, it is also an example of one of the more modern Bears with Baby Honey in it. She is now old enough to run around and play with her older siblings, Brother and Sister Bear. And what they play is Pirates!  However, the one part of the story that is not as traditional is the fact their Christian values or moral story is […]

Most marshmallows read a book before bed and if you do too, try this book

Most Marshmallows by Rowboat Watkins

May 1, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

First blush I had of Most Marshmallows by Rowboat Watkins: This is completely and totally anti-establishment. DO NOT BE A MARSHMALLOW! Do not stand in straight lines! Do not be squishy! Be free! Do you own thing! Breath fire! Second blush: This story has been done before. That “Be yourself. Be whatever you want to be. Even (gasp!) breath fire!” Honestly, how many times can we do this story? While some of the things “you can do” are different: as we know marshmallows and fire […]
