Flora’s Tree House by Gabriel Alborozo

June 18, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you have a sibling? Well, if you do, you know that you do not always get along. But sometimes, they can be your best friend. And in Flora’s Tree House we see a sweet story about siblings that shows you might not always like them, but you usually love them, and they can be your best friend. And we see in Gabriel Alborozo’s book how Flora and Will check off all the boxes. Will: pesky brother, adventurous, loud. Flora: thoughtful, artistic, likes Will’s inspirations […]

“For one small mite (One small mite) One tiny bite (Tiny bite) Of this fantastic peach!”

The Last Peach by Gus Gordon

June 18, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Last Peach is a clever, simple story. Gus Gordon’s text along with the mixed media illustrations, create an amusing story with a twist ending that really brings out the humor that had been building with the crazy antics of a couple of critters. Anticipation and expectation are the themes of the story. Along with “what if” as well. A couple of bugs want to eat the last peach of the summer. Yet, they must decide many things: what if the peach is not sweet? […]

He might be a dirty rat, but he is MY rat!

Cyril and Pat by Emily Gravett

June 17, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cyril and Pat is a good story about friendship with some fabulously great illustrations. Emily Gravett created a book that, while on the surface seems like a normal friendship book, has a slightly different ending. Everyone is trying to tell Cyril (a lonely grey squirrel in the park) that his new friend Pat, is a rhyming word. Literally. But Cyril only sees the good in Pat. How he shares and is funny. How he is just an all-around good friend. Nothing can or will change […]

A silly tale of the end times

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

June 15, 2019 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Good Omens, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch was my first foray into the mind of Terry Pratchett. It was my fourth read from Neil Gaiman. I know, I know, I need to read more Pratchett. Since I enjoyed this collaboration, I definitely will soon. The book follows two unlikely friends Aziraphale, an angel, and Crowley, a demon, who must stop the end of the world. They’ve known each other since the Garden of Eden. They kept in touch despite working for […]

When a Tiger comes to dinner she will want to…..

When a Tiger Comes to Dinner by Jessica Olien

June 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a Tiger Comes to Dinner is a weak story. The all-knowing narrator Jessica Olien has created has broken the fourth wall and the story/reader relationship has bled together. And this makes the narrator come across as condescending and, in the end, a know-not-a lot narrator. But it is the fun and hidden details in the illustrations that made the book. The mouse has neat things like silly book names/covers and photographs around the rooms. There are puns and just neat things to look at. […]

I Am Kind: A Little Book about Abraham Lincoln by Brad Meltzer

June 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Am Kind: A Little Book about Abraham Lincoln talks about the personality of Lincoln with the backdrop of being kind (a trait he was known for) as the moral to the story. And while being kind is a subject or moral for all ages to learn, the overall feeling of the book (the fact that it is being told by the point of view of Lincoln and dealing with in simple terms, the personality and events of Lincoln) seems a bit mature for the […]
